Description

I was punished frequently, for the slightest infraction, and the punishments were almost always physical—hitting and slapping. Fittingly blurring the lines between artist and art, this biography acts as a keystone in the life of one of the most high-profile performance artists in the world. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Marina Abramovic is the world's most celebrated performance artist, nicknamed the "Grandmother of Performance Art" for her extensive body of work, she's led a fascinating life, from a dark childhood in postwar Yugoslavia to finding worldwide fame as an artist known for testing, and overcoming, the limits of fear and pain.

But it still managed to exceed my expectations; I think I was anticipating entertaining and instead I got revelatory. Her visceral and extreme performances have tested the limits of both body and mind, communicating with audiences worldwide on a personal and political level. Even if you are not a fan of her art I would recommend reading this book, I am always at awe how life takes us on various journeys and how we cannot predict the outcomes of the choices we make, and memoirs of artists prove it in the most breathtaking way. Being active for over four decades, Abramović refers to herself as the "grandmother of performance art".

Born in postwar communist Yugoslavia, she shares a childhood joke: “A guy retires and his award for being an exceptional worker is to be told he will receive a car in 20 years’ time.

But my mother discovered that she had the same blood type, and gave him her blood and saved his life.

Worse still, my brother soon developed some form of childhood epilepsy—he would have these seizures, and everyone hovered around him, giving him even more attention. These big subjects are all aired in this engaging memoir, in which the reader is invited to walk through perceptual and conceptual walls with her. In 2007, she founded the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), a non-profit foundation for performance art. Some of her best-known and most radical works appear alongside new works created especially for the exhibition. The energy present can help you induce different higher states of consciousness, like clairvoyance, astral travelling, and telepathy among others, besides bring each partcipant closer to her/himself through relaxation, increase of perception and paraperception, reflexion and travelling inside and outside yourself, further prospecting who you are as a self, a soul, a spirit.
