Once opened, you get a good look at the screen, which is surrounded by a plastic bezel. The left and right bezels are pretty small, which is the standard nowadays. The top bezel is a little larger and the bottom bezel is twice the size. There’s a Legion logo centered on the bottom bezel and a standard webcam centered at the top. One thing to do to really improve the battery life is remember to switch the screen frequency down to 60Hz (instead of the 165Hz) by pressing Fn-R ("refresh"). I found this adds a couple of hours to the battery life, making the windows battery estimate 10 hours or so on mine. I never actually tried testing the battery to see if it did make it this long. Pity the laptop doesn't switch the refresh rate automatically when unplugging, like on the Asus laptops. The one thing that’s missing on this model is the kill switch on the right side of the laptop, like on other Legion models this year. Instead, there’s a physical shutter on the webcam itself. Better than nothing, but I prefer the kill switch since it completely disables it, including the audio. Battery life Yes, it is real. There was even s better offer in another finnish store couple of weeks ago where Lenovo Legion 5 pro cost 1279 euros. And that version had QHD display and RTX 3070 with 140W. The offer you linked has only FHD display and the 3070 video card is ”only” 130W version.

Lenovo Legion 5 17-inch review (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3070) Lenovo Legion 5 17-inch review (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3070)

What really stood out to me was the peak brightness, being so close to 500 nits. This made a big difference when using the laptop next to a bright window. I still don’t think it’s enough to battle glare from direct sunlight, but I don’t use my laptop outside much anyway. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU: High-End laptop graphics card based on the Ampere GA104 chip. Available in different versions with a TDP from 80 to 125 Watt. The average temperature for the upper side under maximal load is 37.4 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 33.9 °C / 93 F for the devices in the class Gaming.

I was also considering the 2020 Asus Rog Zephyrus G15 GA502IV-HN042 AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS/16GB/1TB SSD/RTX2060/15.6" for 1300€. The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is an excellent gaming laptop, a match for something like the Alienware m15 R6 in most respects, but it costs less. Its screen is excellent and, largely thanks to Nvidia DLSS, higher-resolution displays in laptops like this no longer seem frivolous luxuries. There are just two potential problems: you may find the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro a bit dull if you'd choose to put RGB lighting into your toaster; the touchpad is a weak point too - it's a plastic pad that doesn't match up to the quality of the other parts. This one feels like it wants to spend most of its time rooted to a desk with a separate mouse plugged in, though, so that second point may not matter too much. Because, without doubt, the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is one of the best gaming laptops to arrive in 2021. The other thing to note is just how much better Quiet mode is on the CPU temps and the noise level. It’s so much quieter that would probably play games in this mode much of the time, if I used this laptop daily. For some games, including Horizon Zero Dawn, shifting to Quiet mode doesn’t cripple performance, but there is a noticeable impact on other titles, so you’ll have to test out the profiles yourself. The thermals are strictly controlled by the Lenovo Vantage software, which you only get three options to choose from. Balanced mode offers the best balance between quiet fans and decent performance. TDP will be allowed to hit 46W, while TGP will hover around 115W. In this mode my fans peaked at 48dB.

As for external temperatures, there were no surprises with this laptop. I took some FLIR readings so you can get a look at what to expect with normal tasks on battery and again with a heavy gaming session. The maximum volume is a little below average for my taste. I could only get it to reach 70dB, but only after tweaking Nahimic. In performance mode, the fans really start to overwhelm the speakers at full volume. The Ryzen 7 6800H and 150 W GeForce RTX 3070 Ti are each about 10 percent faster than the Ryzen 7 5800H and 140 W GeForce RTX 3070 on last year's Legion 5 Pro. The 2022 refresh is therefore merely just a minor upgrade over the 2021 model with no major external or internal changes. The 80 Wh battery can manage decent battery runtimes, but it depends on the GPU. When the Nvidia GPU is running and the hybrid mode is deactivated, we record up to 5 hours in our Wi-Fi test and 1:45 hours under maximum load. Competitors with working graphics switching obviously have an advantage in this respect. The Legion 5 Pro gaming laptop has little flaws, and most aren’t a big problem. Among such cons, I can mention the average battery life. The Legion 5 Pro impressed me a lot, and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to buy a modern gaming laptop, play on a 16-inch QHD+ display and is looking for high performance for an affordable price. This is a powerful gaming machine that is also good for games and everyday tasks. This configuration on hand comes with an RTX 3070, although you can also get the 3060 or 3050 if you want to save some money. This top GPU has 8GB of VRAM, which should be plenty, especially considering the screen is only FHD. On paper, this looks very similar to the Legion 5 I reviewed a few months ago. But in reality, there are some subtle differences that need to be pointed out, especially if you’re on the fence about choosing between the two sizes.
