Description

Both routes take in a number of points of interest, including the Grade II listed Parish Church of St Mary and St Gabriel, the 19th century Grimsby Road Pump, and the old Binbrook Water Mill, whilst the longer route also offers the chance to see wildflowers. This book has an intriguing title which doesn't give any clues to what the book is going to be about which is why I entered for it on Goodreads First Reads, and when I won and it arrived I saw the cover and I just knew it was going to be a good book. The cover gives the impression of the east, which is where the majority of the book is set.

Salt road - Wikipedia

A beautiful and poignant novel, brilliantly written to capture the readers hearts. I absolutely loved it. For readers looking to experience a shifting, disappearing world, and to be introduced to an exotic culture with evocative descriptions, The Salt Road is an exhilarating ride. Part historic and part contemporary, with universal themes of betrayal, love, and the anguish caused by human greed, it has an ending rich and fulfilling enough for those who like all their questions answered.” In a surprising act of nobility, Takeda’s arch-enemy, Uesugi Kenshin, offered to provide salt to him from his domain along the Sea of Japan, stating that battles should be fought with weapons, not through denying necessities, like salt, to the common people. Despite their lifelong rivalry, Uesugi wrote to Takeda, “A salt embargo is cowardly and unjust. I will fight you with bows and arrows, not with rice and salt. I beg you to henceforth obtain salt from my land…” As railway construction flourished and the national highway opened during the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Salt Road fell into disuse. Nevertheless, walking along this lesser-known trail evokes a sense of the people, cattle, and horses that traversed it in centuries past. The road takes us through forgotten hamlets, majestic beech forests, and along clear mountain streams and ponds. The only sounds are birdsong and the rustling of leaves, the atmosphere imbued with the essence of bygone times. The Upper salt road takes you to discover a vast territory, straddling Italy and France, between mountains and sea. If you would like to hike along the Salt Road and learn more about it, Walk Japan offers guided tours for small groups. Separated by different times and cultures, the lives of Izzy and Mariata are about to become fatally entwined. This novel tells the stories of Isabelle Treslove-Faucet, once a wild tomboy but now a reformed, "grown up" corporate tax accountant, and the circumstances that lead her to travel to Morrocco to uncover her mysterious past, and Mariata, a Tuareg woman and desert wanderer who experiences a host of misfortunes and travails and must make a thousand-mile journey across the Sahara on foot to protect herself and her baby from an unwanted marriage. The two narratives are set about forty years apart in time, but this does not become apparent early on, so for a while readers will struggle to determine when and where all this is taking place and how any of these events could be linked together. From Dines Green towards Worcester, service will turn right onto Bromyard Road instead of left after serving Dines Green estate, the left onto A4440, left onto Bransford Road, left onto Watery lane and right to resume normal route at Bedwardine Inn.

History of the Salt Way | Salt Way Activity Group

Dosojin guardians, small carved stones shaped like couples or sometimes represented merely by a rough stela, can frequently be seen in the more isolated parts of the highway and near mountain passes. Due to works to a sign on the railway bridge at Broadway Grove, service 30 will need to divert in both directions to and From Dines Green between 0900 and 1530. In the tenth century along an established salt road mule trains brought firewood from the Rouergue to the deforested Mediterranean ports and returned laden with salt. This route is a fantastic choice for those with a love of poetry. As it’s believed the countryside around Bag Enderby and Somersby served as the inspiration for many of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s early works.

The Salt Way is thought to be one of several ‘Salt Ways’ radiating from Droitwich, in the Midlands. Salt appears naturally as Brine there, bubbling up from the ground at a concentration twenty times stronger than sea water. The result, after boiling off the water, is a much cheaper, purer and more desirable salt – a valuable and universally needed commodity. She returned home, gave up her office job in London, sold her flat and shipped the contents to Morocco. In October she married her own 'Berber pirate' and now they split their time between Cornwall and a village in the Anti-Atlas Mountains. When Isabelle’s estranged father dies he leaves her the house she grew up in, in the attic of which lies a mysterious box with her name on it. Inside the box are three items: an archaeological paper about an ancient Saharan queen, a faded piece of paper written in what appears to be in Arabic, and a curious piece of antique silver: an amulet. The book switches between two stories which linked to each other at the end of the book. The first being the story of Isabelle which started at beginning, then the second was introduced cleverly by Isabelle having a dream. The story weaves together to tell the two tales of Mariata and Isabella. These two women have had very contrasting lives, living in different times and countries, where women are treated in hugely different ways and have vastly different expectations. Isabella in the West being, what we would think of, as a strong, independent, ambitious woman and Mariata in the more Eastern lifestyle. Yet Mariata too is a strong, independent and ambitious woman. The outworking of these qualities in their lives and diverse circumstances bring lots of substance to the story.

The porters, too, differed from their Five Highways counterparts. Called bokka, literally “walking loads,” they were often farmers and their wives. They traveled in groups of ten or more, sometimes accompanied by beasts of burden, primarily oxen and horses. Horses were well-suited for the flat sections of the road, but oxen proved their worth by their ability to navigate the treacherous mountain paths with sure-footed precision. The Trans-Saharan Trade Route from North Africa to West Africa was actually made up of a number of routes, creating a criss-cross of trading links across the vast expanse of desert. These trade routes first emerged in the fourth century CE. By the 11th century, caravans composed of more than a thousand camels would carry goods across the Sahara. Gold, slaves, salt, and cloth were traded along the route, as were objects like ostrich feathers and European guns. Kosi, Miha (January 1998). Silk was traded from China to the Roman Empire starting in the first century BCE, in exchange for wool, silver, and gold coming from Europe. In addition to fostering trade, the Silk Road also became a vital route for the spread of knowledge, technology, religion, and the arts, with many trading centers along the route, such as Samarkand in modern-day Uzbekistan, also becoming important centers of intellectual exchange. Due to the closure of Ledbury Road in Wellington Heath, Service 675 will divert from Ledbury via Bromyard Road, Storesbrook Bridge, Staplow Crossroads and Hollow Lane to and from Wellington Heath (Oak Tree). Stops along Ledbury Road and Beggar’s Ash will not be served. From limestone cliffs to rolling hills and fens, you can explore the countryside and catch a glimpse of a wide array of flora and fauna.
