Once the poor relation of network streamed audio, Bluetooth is now coming of age. Its latest 5.0 incarnation takes it ever further from its early years of poor sound quality, dropouts and general fussiness. Indeed these days its undoubted virtues of simplicity and ease of use really shine through. You normally find this set-up in products at the higher end of the price spectrum such as the Pro iCAN but iFi is now using this across its range to produce the best quality audio for all our customers.

That the unit informs you of the codec being used in your connection and gives you information about the the sample rate of the file it is receiving, leaves you in no doubt as to what the unit is receiving and the quality of the established connection. It even verbally tells you the name of the codec when it makes the connection with your source device!The slide switch controls whether the output is digital or analog (can't be both). There is both coax and Toslink optical out. What is unusual is the balanced 4.4 mm that is normally reserved for headphones. Here, it is a mini balanced line out. All of this comes wrapped in a compact but well-made chassis. Compared to the dearly departed Mass Fidelity, the iFi doesn’t feel as wonderfully solid but it’s well made and not unattractive. As befits a device with one input, the controls are limited to a single pairing button and a light that shows the sample rate that the Zen Blue is operating at. The most useful aspect of the control isn’t a control at all but is in fact the logo. This changes colour to denote the type of Bluetooth that the Zen Blue is receiving. This sounds inconsequential but it really isn’t. One of the reasons that Bluetooth has descended into the fractured mess it finds itself in is that it can be maddeningly hard to discover what type of Bluetooth your devices have connected at, leading people to believe all is well. iFi has managed to sort this at a stroke.

iFi Audio

Making the most of HD Bluetooth, the internal electronics offer the highest quality sound – just as you’d find in quality Hi-Fi. The ESS Sabre DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) is the same as in many high-end AV receivers and other digital products. The discrete circuit layout uses top quality audio components, such as OV series op amps, Texas Instruments power supply and TDK (Class 1 ceramic) capacitors.
