Anna loves the way that writing lets her ‘try on’ so many different lives, but her favourite part of the job is undoubtedly hearing from readers. Of the 3,000 she delivered, some 2,500 newborns perished; [1] a few hundred others with blue eyes were sent away to be Germanised.

Life inside Auschwitz/ Birkenau was horrifying and to hear about what happened to the mothers and pregnant woman in that camp was inhumane. I just didn't think about women giving birth under those circumstances and in those numbers, the mind just boggles. Though Leszczyńska’s husband and oldest son managed to escape, the younger children and their mother were arrested. And as stated, while many authors try to capture the horrors of concentration camps, this is the only novel I've had the opportunity to read, in which the author tries, and succeeds, at capturing the horrors of babies born in concentration camps. It was a risk the midwife and nurse were willing to take so that the mothers could have some hope in such a dark and horrible place.Es en este contexto donde hace aparición la resiliencia de las personas para, con una simple brizna de esperanza, mantener las ganas de luchar para conseguir sus objetivos. The new mothers even had to trade their meagre bread ration for a bedsheet to use for bandages and swaddling. Me ha encantado la manera de dividirlo en tres partes, antes del campo, durante y después y la narración a dos voces.

This is based on two midwives in Europe during WW11 who are sent to Auschwitz along with so many others. They represent a complex jigsaw of vulnerable human emotions, which are laid bare when the fragility of the lines between life and death, defeat and survival, love and hate, trust and duplicity, the frailty of the human mind and indeed their very existence, are drawn. Y que la inteligencia y picaresca salen a relucir para ayudar a sobrevivir hasta en las peores situaciones. This story follows a polish midwife Ana and a young Jewish nurse Ester, that are sent to Auschwitz and together they help over 3,000 mothers give birth while in this terrible place. After just a few short days and with the war intensifying, life takes a very sudden and much more horrendous turn for the population, than they could have ever thought possible. During the baby years I wrote in the brief gaps provided by sleeps, playschools and obliging grandparents, publishing short stories and serials in all the women’s magazines.
