Life inside Auschwitz/ Birkenau was horrifying and to hear about what happened to the mothers and pregnant woman in that camp was inhumane. I just didn't think about women giving birth under those circumstances and in those numbers, the mind just boggles. Though Leszczyńska’s husband and oldest son managed to escape, the younger children and their mother were arrested. And as stated, while many authors try to capture the horrors of concentration camps, this is the only novel I've had the opportunity to read, in which the author tries, and succeeds, at capturing the horrors of babies born in concentration camps. This is based on two midwives in Europe during WW11 who are sent to Auschwitz along with so many others. They represent a complex jigsaw of vulnerable human emotions, which are laid bare when the fragility of the lines between life and death, defeat and survival, love and hate, trust and duplicity, the frailty of the human mind and indeed their very existence, are drawn.
