Device for generating bright light when heated by a flame A Coleman white gas lantern mantle glowing at full brightness h2>
Use only Coleman Stove and Lantern Fuel, or clean white white gasoline. Never use fuel containing lead compounds or lubricating oils. Store your fuel in a clean, closed metal container. (Glass containers are dangerous - may break.) It's not how 'powerful' the mantle is, rather, how much fuel vapour the vapouriser (i.e. the generator in Yankspeak) can produce. It's vital to use a mantle that's capable of handling whatever amount that is. So, if the mantle is too large, the vapouriser won't be able to supply sufficient vapour to 'fill' it and it'll not incandesce fully. This is typically the situation found with the Tilley '500' series where the 300cp vapouriser is trying to fill a physically larger mantle. Even with the extra tank pressure you're supposed to pump it to, the vapouriser just can't produce sufficient kero vapour and you tend to get light greyish areas on the mantle surface where it's not incandescing fully. Conversely, a small mantle on a large vapouriser isn't going to be any good either. Your fuel source (usually gas canisters) may add another four or five pounds on top of that… yikes! Although many cheaper and/or unbranded options exist, due to the potential health hazards entailed in lantern use we’d highly recommend opting for a certified, “tried and tested” brand. In June 2001, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission published a study about the Systematic Radiological Assessment of Exemptions for Source and Byproduct Materials, [9] stating that radioactive gas mantles are explicitly legal in the US. Remove Ball Nut at very top of lantern. Lift off the ventilator and take out the Pyrex Glass Globe. If light pulsates after installation of a new Generator, pump in additional air pressure until light is steady. Substances in gasoline which do not vaporize will form gums in the generator of your lantern. The length of service you get from your lantern and generator depends greatly upon the kind of fuel you use. div class="bvseo-author">Answered by: Krystal, at Coleman®
At present, camping brands Coleman and Campingaz have something of a monopoly over the fuel-burning lantern market, although Swedish brand Primus also produce a range of very popular, reliable, and well-made products.
Let cool after burning it off before lighting lantern. Good air pressure in the lantern will help to shape it and 30 minutes burning on first lighting will help its strength. Rotate the cleaning needle lever at base of frame. Several turns will clean the Generator Tip. Leave lever pointing down. Take particular care when preparing your mantle prior to igniting your fuel source — this is when the mantle’s material emits the highest concentration of fumes h2>

Larger lanterns will be greedy on the gas but offer a higher lumens output that might just save you carrying additional light sources if camping in a large group.
