Description

When Stella and three other junior explorers get separated from their expedition can they cross the frozen wilderness and live to tell the tale? Without her ice tiara she's powerless, but her guardian Felix and polar bear Gruff save the day -- and her. She makes it inside the Club and Felix won't let her out again, not until he can bring the witch that killed Stella's parents to justice. Neither is a focus, however. A multiple prize-winning hit in Wegelius’s native Sweden, this extraordinary book acquires a passport full of stamps – Portugal, Egypt, India, Greece – as it masterfully juggles skulduggery and malaria, accordion-making and aeronautics, fado and pastries, police corruption and at least two love stories. To say anything more would spoil what is a rare treat: a book you want to thrust into the hands of children and adults alike.

Then her friend and fellow explorer, Ethan Rook, with the Ocean Squid Explorers Club, arrives. His father has brought a magical cuff that can control the bone-eating vulture threatening Stella. Except it's not unoccupied, of course. Gideon Smythe, son of the leader of the Jungle Cats Explorers Club, is on board and quite cross they've stolen his Club's dirigible, not to mention failed to realize what a great Picnic Master he is. A year ago, I fell in love with the first volume of The Polar Bear Explorer's Club and its enchanting world. This second book is sadly a bit of a disappointment: the story is not bad, far from it, the world is still interesting but the book has nothing really new to offer. Read about the Faber story, find out about our unique partnerships, and learn more about our publishing heritage, awards and present-day activity. This book has so many twists and turns from this point I won't try to summarize them all. Read and enjoy the ride, literally! As well as the (excellent) characters I also liked the many great adventures they went on and how they thought of ways to get out of the problems they got into, by using the knowledge they were gifted from their parents. The Forbidden Expedition is a worthy sequel to the first Polar Bear Explorers Club book, featuring favorite characters, quirky adventures with a hint of danger, and entertaining plot twists. If you’re looking for a good middle grade fantasy series with fun quests and lots of imagination, these might be the books for you.

Trotz dem empfohlenen Lesealter fand ich es anspruchsvoll, auf englisch zu lesen, und ich hab doch immer wieder einige Wörter nachschlagen müssen. Was mit dem Reader tatsächlich sehr praktisch ist, weil man das Wort markieren kann und direkt eine englische Beschreibung davon angezeigt bekommt :) all those mistakes and wrong turns are how we find out who we really are, deep down. It´s how wie strengthen our souls. Ich habe leider eine ganze Weile für das Buch gebraucht, denn an den meisten Tagen habe ich fast nichts lesen können. War nach den sehr guten vorigen Lesemonaten fast zu erwarten. I do advise you to reae the first book in the series though as it brings out even more fun and goodness when reading this one. We meet the characters from the first book and it’s like meeting old friends. What adventure are we going on this time? They’re taking us to the infamous Witch Mountain, where few explorers dare to tread. It’s a great pity that we all spend so much time trying to be exactly the same when, in fact, we should be celebrating those things that make us different and uniquely ourselves.“This is a magical and charming adventure with memorable characters: Shay the wolf-whisperer, Ethan the grumpy magician, and Beanie, a genius half-elf. It is suggested that Beanie is on the autistic spectrum, although this is not explicitly stated. This extraordinary fantasy is the first book in Philip Pullman's multi-award-winning His Dark Materials trilogy

Now she happily dwells in an entirely make-believe world of blood, death, madness, murder and mayhem. The doctors have advised that it is best not to disturb her, for she appears to be happy there. If I had to define this book in just one word it would be this: ADORABLE! The characters from the first book return, with their adventures this time taking them to the infamous Witch Mountain, where few explorers dare to tread. These intrepid mini explorers learn more about their moral compass as they navigate the skies and the lands for justice. And as they expand upon their maps of the world they discover they have much to learn about themselves and what is far closer to home in the process.

One of those casually erudite children’s books that does not treat children as kiddywinks, The Murderer’s Ape follows the saga of Sally Jones – a mechanically gifted seafarer who happens to be an ape – and her attempts to clear the name of her human friend, falsely accused of murder. Despite the beautiful illustrations, we are near the top of the age range here: parents might be asked to explain why a maharajah might have concubines, and why a sensible woman might be in love with someone who leaves her with bruises. I just love these series! The first book was already a smasher and this one didn't disappoint either. The characters are really the strongest point here. Once again we follow a journey, which is always exciting in this universe! The mentioned wonderful, magical food shows off the author's creativity well. It must have taken a lot to invent all of those things.
