Description

A short story by Grant Morrison ("Captain Granbretagne") offers an interesting and eerie variation on Captain Britain's origin story that also makes this volume worthwhile reading. This was an adventure from the early 80's after they revived the character and gave him a new uniform, and dispensed with his 6 foot staff. Brian Braddock, Captain Avalon, is head Knight of Arthur’s Kingdom of Avalon, one of the 8 regions of Otherworld. Captain Britain is a character who probably never got his full due but this might be because of his internal contradictions.

There’s so much content in this book that the table of contents — even with it’s tiny little font — takes up three full pages. He’s then transformed into Captain Britain, with a superhero costume and a staff that he barely understands. I mean, this is a fairly complete readthrough, and it does seem like Captain Britain’s pre- Excalibur story is probably at least somewhat important. It can be a little jarring to jump back and forth between the black-and-white and full-color images, but I honestly don’t mind. He’s injured in a motorcycle accident, and is approached by two mysterious supernatural figures who offer him a choice: He can pick up either an enchanted sword or a magical amulet. And when the events that destroyed that world begin to repeat themselves on his own, Captain Britain faces a destiny that he cannot avert. And Captain Britain remains one of the greatest 'superhero' runs I've had the privilege to read yet. A Captain Britain Omnibus published in 2009 reprinted every Captain Britain story from 1981-1986 plus a variety of extra material in a huge hardcover volume, and in October 2016, Captain Britain: Legacy of a Legend reprinted selected strips from 1976-1986 as a celebration of forty years of the Captain.

The Black Knight strip wasn't that bad, but seemed to go on forever even though each individual story was only a few pages long. Despite my proselytising, this omnibus does have another 800 or so pages of content, which run the gamut from acceptable to good, to even great on very rare occasions. Yes, he still appears and is dealt with creatively when he does even if he is not the figure that he was in the early 1980s. Davis was tasked with redesigning the lead character's costume with the stipulation to lose the clumsy sceptre, with the artist taking a cues from military uniforms in the new look and bulky out his physique. The Captain Britain title launched with some fanfare, even garnering reviews (albeit negative ones) in The Financial Times [5] and The Daily Record. Alan Moore had some basic requirements involving credits printed in the book, Marvel flubbed it on the first printing, and that pretty much sunk any chance they had.

It's not too often that the family is featured together as part of the main cast in one title, at least not for a long time until recently. The three in-between tales by Davis and others are OK, bringing Captain Britain back down to Earth, but not exceptional [6/10]. I think sometimes when we really love a character or team we are a little more forgiving for their older stuff that was written for a younger audience. The Captain has, of course, continued to appear in American-produced titles since the 1980s, including Captain Britain and MI-13.However, Ellis would leave the series soon afterwards and his successor Ben Raab swiftly wrote the character. I do know they have an Ultimates omnibus coming in August with the first 6 issues of Ultimates, Ultimate X-men, Ultimate Spider Man, and Ultimate Fantastic Four. Most of the articles coming out list it as a mini but apparently AIPT confirmed it's an ongoing (thanks for the link, H-E-D). Died years before the Cross-Time Caper during which his costume was handed over to Earth-616's Captain Britain. Of all the Brian Braddock stories Marvel could include in an omnibus, I don't understand why this one merited inclusion.
