Once the conflict was over the poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the otherwise barren battlefields. They made trenches and an aerodrome to play. When they were adults, they have to fight during WWI ... To mark the centenary of the start of the First World War one of the UK’s top creative teams, Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey, have dedicated their new book Where The Poppies Now Grow to their great uncles who fell at the Somme.

Using rhymes and delicate pictures that hint at the reality without being brutal, it tells the story of Ray and Ben as they progress from children playing in a poppy field to soldiers in the trenches. It treads a subtle line between gentle story telling and harsh reality - a pleasing book with a moving message.set in a bygone age. Martin, who previously illustrated War Horse for OUP, has with illustrious artwork captured the very essence of the time, the innocence of childhood and the courage of those in battle. In short Where The Poppies Now Grow is a celebration of the human condition. Childhood Friends ben and Ray find their innocent War games become Real as the great War rages around them . The destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th Century transformed bare land into fields of blood red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. If I’d had the same opportunity when I was a child I may have been inclined to find out more about my great uncle, Sjt, G B N Johnson who fell on the tenth day of the Battle of the Somme. He was just 22 years old.

We have also included slides that cover wider knowledge of elements of the book. E.g. Poppy Appeal and Louis Bleriot. Martin Impey studied graphic design with distinction and alongside illustration has worked in design, film, advertising and marketing. The story, specially written for young children, is a work of fiction and, in homage to the war poets, has been written in rhyme. Through the words and the pictures we have tried to recreate the sense of duty and pride of the time and to celebrate the human condition. That, no matter what, friendship is a more powerful force than conflict. As we see the boys Ray and Ben ‘flying’ into the barn nearly half way through the book, we see that there are newspaper cuttings of Louis Bleriot nailed to the walls.

Know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. Seeing the beautiful and moving pictures of primary school children planting poppies as part of the World War 1 commemorations has been truly inspiring. This picture book is about two best friends, Ben and Ray who played at war when they are kids.Their dreams was to become soldiers in the war. Their dream were realized soome years later. This is another fantastic resource that shows a full range of clothing for soldiers as well as exploring the weapons used. It has been an honour to play a small part in the centenary commemorations and to indirectly support the work of the poppy planting initiative. We were particularly humbled when one reviewer paid us the ultimate compliment by saying that after reading Where The Poppies Now Grow, “children will never look at the poppies in the same way again.”
