Like any good story, the author is able to make you feel like you are there with the characters, experiencing what they are experiencing and feeling what they are feeling. Unfortunately, what they are mostly feeling is exhaustion and a strong desire to give up. So I felt, at many points, exhausted and wanted to give up. And yet, there was always something there making me want to go just a bit further, and when I did there was always something interesting around the next corner. It almost never went in the direction I expected. characters which have been living with one another for over 30 years, who know nothing else besides fighting the wind, going forward no matter what, who don't always get along, who love, hate and don't understand one another, let alone the purpose or utility of their mission which really is a religious one. Damasio weaves a wonderful, touching and suspenseful story about faith, friendship, hardships and science. The mythology and technology he creates around the wind and the way the inhabitants try and often fail to adapt to its raging strength is truly unparalleled.

Even from the beginning, there are hints that this quest is misguided. For example, in the first chapter they pass a city. If there is a city further upwind from where the groups start, then why, after hundreds of years of these hordes, haven't they moved the starting point further upwind? Other revelations in further chapters raise more such issues. The characters themselves aren't immune from wondering, and this becomes one of the major themes of the book: what gives meaning to your quest? or to your life? How do you continue fighting in the face of enormous obstacles when you're not even sure that what you're fighting for makes sense. The characters are all very different and thus find different reasons for continuing. From previous Hordes, they know that they still have to reach the Lapsan Puddle (a large but shallow lake), then the suspended towers of Alticcio, then the snow-covered mountains of Norska.No-one has ever been past those. You will find yourself part of this group, rejoicing in their exploits and suffering with them in difficult and seemingly hopeless moments. Exploring inaccessible and deadly places where the real challenge is first of all with oneself. Overcoming your limits.

La horde du contrevent

Spearhead members have two kinds of hunting birds (falcons and “ulturs”), which are an efficient way to find food. To make it short: La Horde du Contrevent, aka The Horde of Counterwind is a french (sci-fi) novel, written by Alain Damasio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Damasio), and it is a pure masterpiece. You must read it if you can.

But there's so much more about this book and it's just about time I got around to telling you about the plot, isn't it? Some of the hardware — notably the carabiners and tethers — is very similar to late XX th Century climbing equipment.
