Ruby Strangelove Young Witch (2015) a teen witch summons all her powers to rescue her mother from evil forces. Hearing impaired and proud, Mel is always on the lookout for more books about deaf people. She loves SFF and horror, but will read anything that’s not tied down. Mel is currently studying for a Natural Sciences degree. She is the proud mum of a tortoiseshell cat and a French Bulldog puppy. Mel loves crafts and video games. LGBTQIA+. Bioqueen. [email protected] Other cult favorites of the era that took a more elevated approach are “Daughters of Darkness” (1971), “The Blood Spattered Bride” (1972) and “Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary” (1975). Banished to the fringes Bloodlust and lesbians — what could be a more winning combination? In honor of Halloween month, the programmers at New York arthouse cinema The Quad are showcasing 12 staples of the lesbian vampire genre, because who doesn’t love a broad with bite? Titled “ A Woman’s Bite: Cinema’s Sapphic Vampires,” the series also complements an excellent Jean Rollin retrospective, Très Outré: The Sinister Visions of Jean Rollin, the French horror auteur who put women at the center of his lush, gothic cinema. “A Woman’s Bite” runs October 26-November 1 at The Quad.

I had the help of my dear friend and amazing party planner/goodie maker extraordinaire, Brooke Daniells (also known as Hadley and Elizabeth). She helped me make sure it was, like, totally rad!” Source: Leah Remini (Penny) Is Catherine Bell a Gay? While Viviane felt her best option was to flee Cameroon, Frederique spoke out after she was gang raped in 2016 by a taxi driver after leaving an LGBT+ workshop in Yaounde. The first, most famous and perhaps only example of an early Hollywood lesbian vampire film is 1936's “ Dracula’s Daughter,” Universal Pictures’ follow-up to its massive 1931 hit “Dracula.” In it, Dracula’s progeny, Countess Marya Zaleska, played by a stone-faced Gloria Holden, tries to free herself from her father’s curse but ultimately gives in to temptation, kidnapping a young woman and holding her hostage in Transylvania. Multifandotakugirl Fandoms: The Avengers (Marvel Movies), The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types, WandaVision (TV)Sexploitation titles, a subgenre of exploitation films, were geared toward men rather than lesbian audiences. The characters “acted as lesbians, but they were very much coded as heterosexual women so that they appealed to straight male audiences,” Weiss said. At the end of The Witch , in the glimmers of the lives Ursula and Maleficent lead, in Elphaba’s defiance, in the joy the first half of The Craft delivers, and in many other witch narratives, lives something incredible. These witch stories often speak far more powerfully to the queer audience than the other mainstream narratives they are allowed. Rom-coms about engagements, glimpses of girl bosses, and the always the momentary cameo of a family all fall short in the face of a norm-breaking, powerful coven. The Worst Witch (1986) a TV movie about a young witch at witch school who just can’t seem to do anything right. Quentin Tarantino sparked renewed interest in this Spanish horror film, putting it on many of his top ten lists and naming a chapter of his “Kill Bill Vol. 1” book after it. DirectorVicente Aranda, the film attained cult status not only for its erotic horror themes, but for its rejection of fascism in Francoist Spain.

Witches in the Woods (2020) not so much a witch movie, but a creepy witch-hunt movie that is new and somewhat good. Women who step out of line are often represented as witches: the Disney, demonic, one-dimensional type who don’t reflect the real practice of witchcraft. We’re witch-hunted online just for disagreeing with misogyny. Lesbians “step out of line” by the fact of our existence — even without intention — because women are supposed to partner up with a man. Beware! Capitalizing on commercialism Witchcraft of any kind is about empowering yourself, tapping into your power, your gifts,” confirms Emilia Ortiz. “It can also be about finding your personal power when it comes to your oppressor. LGBTQ+ have been oppressed throughout the world for centuries, varying in the degree, while also being accepted and celebrated in some cultures (including being regarded as highly spiritually connected). For me, being a bi/pansexual woman, it has been so empowering to be a witch. To operate on a spectrum energetically, not just sexually? To be able to tap into my intuition and converse with my guides for safety purposes? To be able to cast love spells on myself so I could fall in love with the parts of me that society tried to weaponise against me? That has been so powerful and healing for me.”She's forged her own life in the city completely separate from her magical family in Thistle Grove. Perhaps, now is a good time to mention that Emmy is a witch. Oh this MAGICAL creature! How can I possibly express how incredibly grateful I am to call her my friend… to have had 5 seasons of silliness and giggles, love and camaraderie, late night room service and early morning mad dashes to the airport…. and just being there for each other when we were far from home and loved ones ❤️ Every once in a while we are fortunate enough to meet someone who is SO special and once those paths cross….you are friends (really more like family) forever! Bailee!!! you inspire me in so many ways – your kind generous spirit, your work ethic, creativity, talent, care of others, your playful spirit!!! and so much more! LOVE YOU girl!! I will definitely miss you on set.. we ALL will. But I am excited to see where your journey takes you next. And I’m with you wherever that is❤️ In today’s pop culture world, there is an incredible push to tell more queer stories . But despite these efforts, finding narratives that speak to diverse groups remains a work in progress. We still see things like “first-ever gay character” (for the five-hundredth time) and characters that allow platforms to talk the talk but not exactly walk the walk. And if the walk does happen, the vision of a queer person filters through a normative lens. Instead of a story that speaks to the represented group, a find and replace occurs. The witch’s narrative role is to eschew and sometimes destabilize the hallmarks of normative life. Many witch symbols are inversions of a more “typical” traditional existence, especially for women. For example, they fly around on their broom instead of sweeping the floor. They make potions in their cauldrons instead of cooking in them. They are often childless and unmarried. And it is precisely the sum total of these facets which call to the queer audience. Because to hold magic, to be a witch, is to be other.
