Batman: The Animated Series: During the opening sequence of " Harley and Ivy", the Joker demands that Harley Quinn give him a gun to fire at the pursuing Batmobile. The revolver firing in this scene is a sound effect added post-production since firing blanks in such close proximity can potentially injure or kill the actor in front of the barrel. In the animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke, much like in the source material, the Joker accidentally used it against Batman in an attempt to shoot him after recovering his discarded gun, causing him to toss it in irritation (especially when he was partly affected by Batman's revelation that not only did Joker fail in breaking James Gordon, but that Joker may be alone in his madness all along). This was, however, a holdover from a previous version of the script in which the Joker had a tank hidden inside one of his floats and it was instead the tank that shot the Batwing down.

However, after a few seconds of letting the gang believe he was kidding, Joker pulls the trigger a second time which fired the flag as a lethal projectile, killing Bonk (however in the censored version the gun instead of firing the flag, produces a deadly gas which makes Bonk laugh himself to death).Directed by Tim Burton ( Planet of the Apes), Michael Keaton stars as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, who matches wits with the Joker ( Jack Nicholson). Flag Guns are often used as a practical joke when someone intends to shoot a person, but is unable to when it turns out their gun is fake and doesn't shoot actual bullets but only a silly little flag instead. The Beretta was stripped of its wooden housing, triggers (dual on the Beretta), barrel shroud and muzzle brake. The implied murder and/or suicide makes this "joke" really a matter of Black Comedy, despite the otherwise harmless nature of this gag gun.
