We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. The book as a whole is a carefully structured treatise on the big topics needed to appreciate what the blue machine does for the planet, delves into the finer points to provide just the right amount of detail to explain everything, and then lovingly intersperses all of that with storytelling that provides context and deeper understanding to the facts. From vast currents and tides to the smallest creatures that inhabit our oceans she reveals the spellbinding wonder of the oceans. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Alongside her vivid portrayal of waters sliding over one another, colliding, mixing and turning into ice or water vapour, she explains how the living beings within the sea also form part of the ‘blue machine’.

Czerski argues throughout that to truly see the miraculous oceans, to understand and to feel our connection to them, is vital and integral to our history and our future. She has been a science columnist for the Wall Street Journal since 2017 and she is the author of the bestselling Storm in a Teacup: The Physics of Everyday Life , Bubbles: A Ladybird Expert Book, and Blue Machine: how the ocean shapes our world . Blending marine biology, history and climate change concerns with novelistic skill, Blue Machine is a spellbinding exploration of the ocean – its complex, interlinked system and the multitude of ways life on the rest of the planet depends on it.I was intrigued to learn that the faeces of blue whales, which are rich in iron and also float, contribute to marine growth. Ms Czerski is obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject, particularly trying to get people to stop and think about the ocean and how vital it is to our continued wellbeing. While not visible to the naked eye this observation is not unexpected, chiming with land surveys showing increased growth in desert margins. Moving and thrilling, The Blue Machine tells us about the seas but also makes us care: an epic love story that captures the ocean’s beating heart. Alongside her vivid portrayal of waters sliding over one another, colliding, mixing andturning into ice or water vapour, she explains how the living beings within the sea alsoform part of the 'blue machine' . Drawing on years of experience at the forefront of marine science, Helen Czerski captures the magnitude and subtlety of Earth's defining feature, showing us the thrilling extent to which we are at the mercy of this great engine.Part 2 is "Travelling the Blue Machine" This looks at life in the oceans and on the oceans and has 3 sections covering, messengers, passengers and voyagers. Interestingly, satellite imagery has shown a significant increase in green growth in the oceans recently.

I haven't actually finished reading this book yet but I am so loving it that I can't hold back from telling everyone! This is a delightful account of one of the deepest and most fascinating explorations going on today at the frontier of our knowledge.

The final part, Part 3 is " The Blue Machine and Us" This is the 1 section and it is about what we can do or should be doing. This book reminds us that we are the crew (not passengers) of a blue planet and explains in such beautiful detail how the functioning of those oceans (the blue machine in Helen’s words) is absolutely crucial to the continued health of every life form on the planet. This is a fascinating book about the ocean and how it shapes our world, how it impacts our lives and how it helps us today. THE TIMES SCIENCE BOOK OF THE YEAR: 'This beautifully written, sweeping guide shows how the deep movement of the seas have ruled our lives in unexpected ways over millennia. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).

Traditional Chinese and Japanese poetry and art depict the above-horizon, superior mirage, or fata morgana, as exhalations of clam-monsters. All of the Earth’s ocean, from the equator to the poles, is a single engine powered by sunlight – a blue machine. If you have an interest in the natural world, the climate and oceans then this is a book I would definitely recommend. As a physicist, she studies the bubbles generated by breaking waves in the ocean to understand their influence on weather and climate.
