The script loses little time in over-explaining why Patience chose to dress like Kick-Ass in particular: it simply assumes that that iconography is part of her world’s zeitgeist, aligned with past volumes of the series. Kick-Ass has always been a book that pushed the envelop of what a comic book can do and I am expecting no less from this story.

If it can maintain the intensity and creativity of this first issue, without giving in to the lowest common denominator approach to scripting that mars moments of this issue, this is going to be well worth the time and money. The goal of /r/Movies is to provide an inclusive place for discussions and news about films with major releases. Relive what happens when Dave Lizewski asks himself "How come nobody's ever become a superhero before? He and artist Bryan Hitch pulled it all off in spades: The Ultimates and its sequel, Ultimates 2, were ensconced at the top of the sales charts every month; what's more, they were critical successes, as well. Over at colors, Steigerwald clearly worked hand-in-hand with Millar and Romita, as much of the issue’s pace is reinforced by the choice of palette: the Afghanistan pasts sequences have very earthly notes, gradually shifting to lighter and brighter shades when Patience is with her family, to dark and dirty towards the end.She produces a podcast of the same name, is a Rotten Tomatoes approved critic and contributes to a number of publications including JumpCut Online and Filmhounds. Overall, Millar has put together a provocative look at super hero conventions which pokes both fun at its devotees while at the same tries to have a meaningful, albeit implausible purpose. All it needs is some time to grow and a fine balance of smart storytelling and exhilarating action to turn it into a success. For all that the book aims to show us ordinary people playing at being superheroes, the violence is often stylized and exaggerated to the point where any sense of reality is washed away. That is not how this series is presented, however, and there's a distinct lack of self-awareness regarding its love for carnage.

Overall, I loved the introduction to the new Kick-Ass story arc, believing it to be a solid and impactful start. The original “Kick-Ass” volumes (and its parallel series, “Hit-Girl”) have always been about ordinary people entering the fray of extreme violence, for reasons that are far more linked to real-world scenarios and themes rather than impossible, supernatural justifications.

While one of the more recognizable Millarworld properties, Kick-Ass has never really lived up to its potential as a story exploring what happens when ordinary people attempt to become costumed vigilantes. The legend of Kick-Ass continues and Patience makes her presence felt as the more than worthy successor. This could be the beginning of a new age for "Kick-Ass" that does not pander nor alienate long-time readers. The colours from Steigerwald are pretty dark and muted in this issue, with the red blood spurts really standing out! Designing a suit for himself and taking the name "Kick-Ass," Dave decides to make his dreary existence more exciting - and maybe even help some people in the process.

I think it might be a new inker responsible for the cleaner images, but, honestly, no one actually notices the 'tracer' (don't hate me inkers, it's a Chasing Amy joke), so it might just be a different style for a different book by JRJr.Knowing Millar´s ability to offer tragic situations, this series has the potential for some truly heart-breaking moments down the road – and it cannot come soon enough! follows the theme of realism in his pencils, filling the action panels with blood, bruises, and very grounded fighting.
