A follow-up to last year's The Haunting Season, this collection features twelve stories by contemporary authors working in the Gothic / historical / fantastical / weird milieu: the settings are historical and mostly British, though Catriona Ward's 'Jenkin' is set in Maine, and Laura Shepherd-Robinson's 'Inferno' takes place in late eighteenth-century Italy. Despite the subtitle, not all of the stories feature ghosts. Andrew Michael Hurley's 'The Old Play' centres on a drama that is traditionally performed on New Year's Eve: this year Committee have made some improvements, which they don't explain to the actor playing the role of the Beggar. He's haunted, true, but it's by the memory of war, of Dresden and Hamburg burning. 'Widow's Walk', by Susan Stokes-Chapman, is a slowly-clarifying story about vengeance -- as, in a very different key, is 'A Double Thread' by Imogen Hermes Gowar. And Natasha Pulley's thoroughly unnerving 'The Salt Miracles', set on a remote Scottish island where pilgrims can be cured (if they don't simply vanish) centres on an angel rather than a ghost, though perhaps not the sort of angel one might expect in a winter-themed anthology. It continues the tradition of telling haunted tales at Christmas, which has flourished across the centuries. Each story in ‘Winter Spirits’ is centred around Christmas or Advent. My bells tinkled and rang. The pine needles pattered across the floor. If I squinted, I could just see the blue edge of her, dancing in a fury, whirling with her hands out, breathing her spite against the walls. The plaster bubbled and split. ['Banished', Elizabeth Macneal: loc. 1925] Fixed an issue where Players could obtain an unintentional Juggernaut Killstreak from the UFO on Al Mazrah (Night)

The Master of the House by Stuart Turton: I've only read one of Stuart's books - The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - and so I didn't have a thorough understanding of his writing style, but that was enough to tell me has a great grasp of the complex and the mystery. While it does have an element of horror about it, I found this one to be enormously moving and caused a tear or two whilst reading it, which I wasn't expecting at all. I want to call this a Christmas book, but also a Halloween one, much like Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, it can be read at both times. There's something perfect about the wintery months that bodes well for the scary. If you've now finished watching the brilliantly terrifying The Haunting of Bly Manor, you're probably wondering if creator Mike Flanagan has a season three planned. Witnesses report seeing strange lights and [[REDACTED]] in the night sky over [[REDACTED]], though unidentified anomalous phenomenon (UAP) has [[REDACTED]] or “orbs”. Players who climb into Gold and above will obtain a new reward each season where we previously offered a Weapon Charm associated with their highest attained Division. For Season 06, we're offering Seasonal Division Vehicle Skins.

Nell was a character that carried around a ton of darkness with her and never quite got out of the shadows that she was introduced in when we see her as a child. Between the setting in the ’80s and this idea of a young American abroad, just out on an adventure, it brightened everything up, to begin with.”Eight bestselling authors. A dazzling new collection of original haunted tales. This is your indispensable companion to the long, dark nights this winter. Mission parameters: Entities have been detected throughout the AO, and the [[REDACTED]] of each encounter will be referenced on your Tac-Map. You must investigate each location and eliminate the “Most Wanted” Target, as well as any other hostiles.

The Gargoyle by Bridget Collins: This one gave me the major creeps. I won't go as far as saying I didn't like it, because that makes it sound like I didn't like the story or it wasn't well written or well received. Which it was. But it really freaked me out, I could feel it getting under my skin. I had to have a pause after this one to regroup. Confinement - 3.5 stars. A mother in her childbirth confinement is subjected to a haunting from an evil entity. This story made me feel very anxious and unsettled, and it strikes the balance between uncertainty and reality really well. I liked the additional author note too, which added depth to the story. However I found it all a little bit too rushed.

Even as a loose adaptation, The Haunting of Hill House had the weight of the one of the most important Gothic texts on it shoulders, but it delivered. Its intricate storytelling and use of multiple timeframes didn't just deliver expertly choreographed scares, but also managed to be a thoughtful meditation on the madness of family. The pressure of adapting The Turn of The Screw will arguably bring greater pressure, but Flanagan and his cast have already proved up to the task. Otterson, Joe (February 21, 2019). " 'Haunting of Hill House' Renewed as Anthology, Creators Ink Overall TV Deal at Netflix". Variety . Retrieved February 21, 2019. The Hargrave story looks at Victorian views about childbirth and examines the nature of post-partum psychosis. It is also based partly on the author’s own experience and on a real life Victorian case. This, for me, was the most telling of the stories. Considering how much of a wuss I am, I really enjoyed reading The Haunting Season - also done in this format - and was thrilled to see a new collection coming out. Another creepy story for the collection. This didn't have a whole lot of answers but worked rather well given the spine-chilling atmosphere this collection has.
