Lamey, A. (2019). Duty and the best: Should we eat meat in the name of animal rights? Cambridge University Press. While Hursthouse has applied virtue ethics to practical issues in Beginning Lives and Ethics, Humans, and Other Animals, her most important contribution to philosophy is On Virtue Ethics. In the first section, she shows how neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics provides action guidance and illuminates ethical dilemmas. In the second section, Hursthouse offers the first virtue-based account of acting "from a sense of duty," bringing out the significance of moral emotions. In the third and final section, she considers the question, "Which character traits are the virtues?" This is the most controversial and widely-discussed part of her book. Hursthouse's answer is that the virtues are the character traits which tend to not only benefit their possessor but also, relatedly, make their possessor a good human being — based, in part, on quasi-scientific "ethical but non‐evaluative beliefs about human nature and how human life goes" (" Plato's Requirement on the Virtues"). [1] Before fully committing I had initial review meetings with Andrew Hursthouse. Speaking with Andrew, I realised there were better options open to me that I appreciated. As a result of using The Pension Planner we now have plans in place for our future retirement knowing in our opinion the best advice, and would definitely advise anyone needing assistance with any financial matter to use The Pension Planner. Hursthouse was a student of Elizabeth Anscombe and Philippa Foot, from whom she draws inspiration for much of her work in virtue ethics. Indeed, many consider On Virtue Ethics to be the spiritual successor to Anscombe's 1958 article " Modern Moral Philosophy" as well as Foot's manuscript on ethical naturalism, which has since been published as Natural Goodness (2001). Eudaimonia” is an Aristotelian term loosely (and inadequately) translated as happiness. To understand its role in virtue ethics we look to Aristotle’s function argument. Aristotle recognizes that actions are not pointless because they have an aim. Every action aims at some good. For example, the doctor’s vaccination of the baby aims at the baby’s health, the English tennis player Tim Henman works on his serve so that he can win Wimbledon, and so on. Furthermore, some things are done for their own sake ( ends in themselves) and some things are done for the sake of other things ( means to other ends). Aristotle claims that all the things that are ends in themselves also contribute to a wider end, an end that is the greatest good of all. That good is eudaimonia. Eudaimonia is happiness, contentment, and fulfillment; it’s the name of the best kind of life, which is an end in itself and a means to live and fare well. The development of moral character may take a whole lifetime. But once it is firmly established, one will act consistently, predictably and appropriately in a variety of situations. late of Wollaton. This article looks at how virtue ethics originally defined itself by calling for a change from the dominant normative theories of deontology and consequentialism. It goes on to examine some common objections raised against virtue ethics and then looks at a sample of fully developed accounts of virtue ethics and responses. Another distinguishing feature of virtue ethics is that character traits are stable, fixed, and reliable dispositions. If an agent possesses the character trait of kindness, we would expect him or her to act kindly in all sorts of situations, towards all kinds of people, and over a long period of time, even when it is difficult to do so. A person with a certain character can be relied upon to act consistently over a time. Happy birthday Sean, you would have been 51 today, 23rd June. Mum, Dad, Tricia and Simon xxx A comparatively recent article has dealt with her book in a minor way, i.e., by raising alleged problems for her rejection of the slippery slope argument (to the conclusion that conception is the only non-arbitrary point at which to hold the zygote-embryo-fetus achieves significant moral status) in Hursthouse 1987, pp. 36–37. They have managed to explain very complex (in my estimation) processes and procedures into simple concepts for me and made me feel at ease with the decisions I was making with my pension pot. Trying to second guess the future is either for the Mystic Megs of this world or people who have sound knowledge and understanding, there are no certainties for the future, but Andrew is firmly in the sound knowledge and understanding camp, as opposed to the Mystic Meg approach. I have no hesitation in recommending the Pension Planner as a company or Andrew and an individual. The whole team are professional & courteous and friendly at the same time. I am glad I found them & I have some certainty for my retirement. ( as we know there are only really 2 certainties in life). Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
