Attempting to recall the material you have learned (retrieval practice) is far more effective than simply re-reading the material. I can’t say that every concept in this book was completely mind-blowing and new to me, but Barbara Oakley manages to explain why things that have worked for you for years are actually excellent learning strategies. This book also inspired me to use my planner more and it had a positive effect on my self-esteem (especially before and during exams). I am completely sure that, would I go through this book again, I’d notice advice that I haven’t put to practice yet and I’m planning to implement more of it to my life. For now I’m just happy with all the help this book provided me with. Several recent studies have shown that regular exercise can make a substantive improvement in your memory and learning ability. Learning to Appreciate Your Talent Simplify things and try to explain them to others. Many complex ideas can be broken down into smaller parts. Often these parts will be similar to something you already understand. When you break something down in this way, your understanding of it becomes a lot stronger.

Use explanatory questioning and simple analogies. Try explaining what you are learning in a simple way – preferably to someone else. Tell them what it is “like” (an example she gives if that the flow of electricity is like the flow of water). This more deeply engrains the knowledge in your brain and may get you some clarifying questions. Vari capitoli dedicati ad un'analisi approfondita delle abitudini (l'autrice chiama affettuosamente gli «zombie» le abitudini nel nostro cervello, specie quelle non proficue) e alla gestione della procrastinazione (molto pratica ed efficace), attraverso l'utilizzo di liste delle cose-da-fare e scalette (to-do lists e schedule) e la celebre tecnica del Pomodoro di Francesco Cirillo; Oakley herself hated math and science growing up, and flunked through her high school math and science courses. She enlisted in the army right out of high school because they paid her to learn Russian. The army later commissioned her in the US Army Signal Corps, which required her to develop technical knowledge of things like radio and cable systems. Since the job prospects for Russian linguists are … pretty limited, she couldn’t really leave, either.

Dr. Oakley’s book ultimately helped me enjoy what I do in a way I never could before, when I procrastinated and was stressed out and then tried to shoehorn a bunch of information I hadn't processed into something coherent. This book was a life-changer for me. The main challenge with repetition and practise is that it can be boring. [With recall, I think the challenge is also that it’s hard. We don’t like the sense of failure that comes when we try to recall something and fail. We prefer the illusion of competence involved in re-reading.] But practising regularly for short periods, is much more effective than practising infrequently for long bursts. Improving your memory Consigli utili per autovalutarsi nel bene (evitare di buttarsi giù se si fallisce, imparare a valutare i propri punti di forza ecc.) e nel male (come evitare di essere troppo presuntuosi e perché a volte la troppa fiducia in sé stessi gioca brutti scherzi);

So these were 4 of the things that I found helpful in a mind for numbers, however the book contains alot more affective learning strategies; from creating mind palaces,the feynman technique, how to create a chunking library and much more. I didn’t take many notes on the habits section. See my summary of Atomic Habits for a deeper look at habits. A Mind for Numbers is written for students of math and science, but Barbara Oakley’s perspective, interviews, and recommendations are very useful for everybody who wants to be a SMART 21st Century lifelong learner. It is a practical book that reflects the best knowledge about how our brains process things – both logically and creatively, from the details up AND from the ideas down. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn better – or who wants to help a scholar who wants to excel and LEARN in school.

My Book Notes

The memory palace technique, placing memorable nudges in a scene that is familiar to you, allows you to dip into the strength of your visual memory system. See this article on Litemind for more information. A wonderful book! How do you come to love math and science, and how do you come to learn math and science? Read A Mind for Numbers. Barbara Oakley is the magician who will help you do both.”

When you first begin to learn something, you are making new neural patterns and connecting them with pre-existing neural patterns that are spread through many areas of your brain.

Diciamolo subito è un libro che dalle prime righe ti fa venire la voglia di studiare un po' e mettere in pratica i consigli testé appresi! Questo, da solo, è sicuramente uno dei più grandi complimenti che si possa fare ad un libro di questo genere. Chunks are bits of information that are connected by meaning. For example, the word “sum” comes from the letters “s”, “u” and “m”. To do a “golf swing” you must string together a series of steps from positioning yourself to moving your arms, torso, and hips. Ways I incorporated this was by doing what I didn't like to do for 10 minutes every morning for me that is household tasks. So everymorning I clean, iron or whatever I have to do in the house for 10 minutes, making my myself less stressed and letting most of my energy shift towards other things throughout the day leaving my zombies happy and pain free.

This was an epic moment in my life because I found out that my greatest fear was indeed my true passion in life. I just loved the harmony and beauty of algebraic expressions and calculus formulas especially the meaning behind all of these abstract symbols. With intuitive method of teaching of the khan academy and some mental exertion I managed to learn so many precious things in maths even difficult parts of calculus and I got an A in my AP exam. Since three years ago I have never stopped learning mathematics (except few months for TOEFL) and currently I am studying for the GRE test. Which I am really thrilled by this process and it is not stressful anymore at all. The most important thing is that I’ve decided to keep learning maths for the rest of my life, especially probability and statistics. Math and science are best learned in small daily doses so your brain has the time to absorb and internalize what you’ve learned. So, make sure you alternate between focused and diffused thinking. This is also known as “distributed practice”, i.e. taking breaks between learning sessions instead of doing mass-learning. täiesti asjalik raamat, kuigi üldse mitte selline, nagu ma oleks kaanedisaini ja pealkirja ja alapealkirja põhjal oodanud. jääb ju mulje, et see raamat on... numbritest, matemaatikast ja loodusteadustest? aga on hoopis sellest, kuidas õppida. ükskõik, mida. Procrastination can be like taking tiny amounts of poison. It may not seem harmful at the time. But the long-term effects can be very damaging.”
