Description

The AT-LP120USB offers a built-in phono amplifier and USB port for vinyl ripping. Ideal, if you’re short of cash. The inclusion of these accessories also adds a measure of veiling noise to the sound of the 120. The AT-LP140XP gives you none of that. This enhances the AT-LP140XP’s inherent audiophile aspirations although those DJ accessories will negate that aim to some extent because those features will also inject a measure of noise into the signal. What the hi-fi gods give with one hand, they take away with another. Pre-amplifier and amplifier: These transfer the signal of the record player to the speaker, boosting the sound, because the signal emitted from the turntable is a low level. Often, these are built in, but record-heads say the sound quality is better with external options. However, the Gear4music extended warranty scheme provides an enhanced service, and is designed to offer a higher level of protection than many 'free' warranties offered by some retailers and manufacturers.

Verdict: More suited to casual than audiophile listening, and based on the Technics SL-1200 design, the AT-LP140XP benefits from a heavy chassis, strong bass performance and DJ-friendly direct-drive mechanism. The result was a score draw. The RT83 provided a complex midrange, layered with detail and a sense of refinement that the 140 couldn’t match. That said, the 140 was better in transient terms. The notion of notes starting and stopping on the dot. That element of precision and focus was notable with the 140. On this point, the 140 left the RT83 in its dust. Vocally, the RT83 provided a superior emotional complexity. An impassioned delivery that gave the RT83 a fragility and sensitivity. The 140 offered more life and vitality in the vocals. It provided greater energy and oomph to the vocal performance. Bass had character and an organic sense from the RT83 but greater punch and slam via the 140. Answer : Good question! The AT-LP140XP, AT-LP120XUSB and AT-LP120-USB turntables do look very similar. And while all models have a few basic features that are identical, other features differ.Once you unbox the AT-LP140XP, I think there’s a few things you’ll be able to instantly appreciate about this turntable. The Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP, however, allows you to (for example) swap out the ATN-XP3 stylus for the ATN-XP5 or ATN-XP7. And the more you upgrade, the more you’ll notice the sound quality getting more clear, open, and perhaps even improving the lower end (bass) in your music.

All models are fully manual in operation. There are NO automatic functions. To start and stop the rotation of the record platter, press the Start/Stop button at any time. To place the stylus (needle) on the record, raise the tonearm from the tonearm rest by raising the cueing lever. Use your hand to move the tonearm over to the desired location on the record then lower the arm to the record by lowering the lever. At the end of play, raise the arm by raising the cueing lever, use your hand to return the tonearm to the tonearm rest and lower the arm to the rest by lowering the lever. Au niveau de l'écoute, c'est parfait, et le petit plus: l'isolation de la platine, même avec un niveau sonore XXL, pas d'accroche, une très bonne surprise! As you can see, just based on some of the key features discussed in this section, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB may have been succeeded by the AT-LP120XUSB, but it still has specs that not only can match the AT-LP120XUSB, but in some cases surpass it. Platter: This is usually a metal or plastic plate covered by a rubber mat (which prevents scratching the disc). The record is placed on a rod at the plate's centre. Steel plates are cheaper than aluminium, but the latter provides more stability. The platter is rotated by a drive system, either a belt drive or direct drive. Experts say belt drives offer better sound quality (because there's less noise from the motor). Direct drive systems are favoured by DJs because the turntable's speed is less likely to be altered by the DJ's hand. As David Richard writes on his r ecord player blog: "Quality direct drive players are more expensive. Cheap ones are generally useless."

Features

We’ve already covered some of the advantages the AT-LP120-USB has, but here’s another one I haven’t mentioned yet: Adjustable Tonearm Height. A more mature version of Audio-Technica’s AT-LP120USB, the AT-LP140XP features Technics-like DJ components such as the platter strobe/light, forward/reverse operation, variable pitch control and a retractable light.

The small submarine periscope for illuminating the needle can be lowered into the turntable chassis and, like the Technics classic, raised again at the push of a hydraulic button. This is less smooth than with the “original” and didn’t always work without problems with the test device: I sometimes had to pull out the needle illumination with both fingertips. In contrast to my veteran Technics SL-1210 Mk2, the plate arm also seems lighter and therefore less vibration-free. The AT-LP140XPis an admirable lifestyle design, but its not a true audiophile product. This is not a bad thing in broad terms but, if you’re interested in purchasing a AT-LP140XP, you need to understand exactly what you’re buying and why. CONCLUSION There is a switch under the plate to change the voltage from 230 to 115 volts if necessary. The hinges of the dust cover are also only plugged in and not screwed. Incidentally, the hood is flat at the top, without the typical “Technics bump” above the tonearm, which looks stylish but has probably annoyed every DJ who at some point wanted to place a laptop/controller on it. The Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP is not an audiophile turntable but it is an admirable lifestyle design that will please many analogue fans. It has a tough fight to establish dominance against the worthy and cheaper Fluance RT83 but there is still much to like about the AT-LP140XP. Those positive elements emanate largely from the sturdy and heavy chassis plus its direct drive mechanism. With a responsive and vital bass plus an energetic midrange performance, the AT-LP140XP is a likeable and intriguing turntable and worthy of its inclusion on your demo list.Pour des personnes connaissant ce type de produit, l'assemblage se fait sans réfléchir, et le réglage du bras est très précis. Un réel plaisir de manipuler cette qualité de produit, je n'ai pas trouvé de défaut... You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail.
