Småland was full of deep coniferous forest, especially in the south, and of lesser importance to Götaland compared to the agricultural areas in Västergötland and Östergötland. But on its Baltic Sea coast lay the important town of Kalmar. In 1397, the Kalmar Union was proclaimed at Kalmar Castle, a personal union of the three countries of Sweden, Denmark and Norway under one King – or initially one Queen, as Queen Margaret I became the first sovereign of this, the largest ever of Scandinavian states. In 1996, for the first time, ferries between Gotland and mainland Sweden carried more than 1million passengers in a year. In 2007, the number of passengers exceeded 1.5million. [84] In 2012, the ferries had 1,590,271 passengers and the airlines 327,255 passengers. Set within an idyllic nature reserve, this coastal stretch runs across the western side of the island, from the fishing village of Djupvik to Hammarudden. The largest Baltic Sea island, Gotland, is a picture-perfect paradise with a mountainous interior and a shoreline peppered with sandy beaches. Thanks to its stunning scenery, rich history, and delicious local cuisine, it is one of Sweden's most popular tourist destinations. We looked out for him in return,’ Lars remembers. ‘When American tourists would flood in ever summer asking ‘where’s Ingmar Bergman’s house?’ we’d send them in the wrong direction...’ Bergman stayed on Fårö until he died and there’s now a museum on the island dedicated to his work ( bergmancenter.se/in-english/). ‘We still get a lot of tourists on Fårö,’ Lars tells me: ‘– and in Visby. But they often want to see Vikings,’ here he cradles his bare chin, then adds: ‘When that happens, I send them Per’s way.’

The small countries to the south – Finnveden, Kind, Möre, Njudung, Tjust, Tveta, Värend, and Ydre [ citation needed] – were merged into the province of Småland (literally: [the] "small lands"). Off the coast of Småland was the island of Öland, which became a separate province. Dal to the north west became the province of Dalsland. Since 900 Gotland, has been part of Sweden paying axes to the Swedish government for protection but it still remains an independent community with its own language and culture. Due to its insular position, Gotland is administered by both the Administrative County Board and the Region Gotland Municipality. The county board, headed by the governor, is responsible for implementing the goals of the national government while the municipality is tasked with social amenities including public health, public transport, and public education. We pass bucolic countryside punctuated by collections of stones in the shape of a ship – boat-shaped graves intended to help deceased Vikings sail to an afterlife in Valhalla, the majestic golden hall where the god Odin invited anyone deemed worthy to join him and live in bliss. S:t Hans, a summertime gem as this garden café is idyllically situated in the S:t Hans Church ruins. Gotland is a fully integrated part of Sweden with no particular autonomy, unlike several other offshore island groups in Europe. Historically there was a linguistic difference between the archipelago and the mainland with Gutnish being the native language. In recent centuries, Swedish took over almost entirely and the island is virtually monolingually Swedish in modern times. The archipelago is a very popular domestic tourist destination for mainland Swedes, with the population rising to very high numbers during summers. Among reasons include the sunny climate and the extensive shoreline on mild water. During summer Visby hosts the political event Almedalen Week followed by the Medieval Week, further boosting visitor numbers. In winter, Gotland usually remains surrounded by ice-free water and has mild weather.
