Clive whom she embarked upon a five year affair with, both married, both have children, both linked in each others circles. I would feel sympathy for his girlfriend rather than pity, but she's been such a witch towards me (probably because of his "she was a big meany and I was just a poor innocent victim" crap) that pity is all I can muster. I gave the book 3 stars because although this wasn't the book for me, I think there are a lot of women that will love it, and will truly sympathize with Sally. As I read the journal I was transported to many conversations with friends over the years, the need to go over every word said, every look interpreted etc.

John’s Wood house where you have a huge duck-egg-blue sitting room with French windows leading out onto a private roof terrace. It’s all-consuming, like a love infatuation, but instead of imagining beautiful things and entertaining the hope that they have a possibility of coming to fruition, you imagine dark, violent things and know that there will never be a sense of completion. I expect you were wondering what it was I was saying every time there was a silence (which, let’s face it, isn’t that often when having a conversation with Susan, although I did my best to hold my own). Fatal attraction was never one of my favorite movies so I’m not surprised I didn’t really care for this book.Sometimes I’ve allowed myself to imagine dropping in for coffee on Susan’s days off, and sitting chatting over the kitchen table while you sit working at your computer in your top-floor office. I actually liked the authors writing style, descriptions and believe she has a great talent as an author. It’s strange, but when I first started writing as Sally, she appeared as a normally sane woman who just happened to be in the throes of a crisis, but the more I wrote, the less sane she revealed herself to be. My circumstances are similar to yours (husband got into a flirty friendship with colleague which led to them kissing) and it's really hard.

Still, you’d imagine a trained therapist would know what they were talking about, wouldn’t you, so I’ll have to assume she has some basis. Does the fact that Sally and Daniel aren’t legally married allow Sally to feel less guilt about cheating on Daniel? This is an extraordinary novel, unique in style and a compelling read - Sally and Clive are both pretty obnoxious characters at times, but even so I needed to know how this sad and sordid relationship was going to end. Sally’s romance with Clive unspools in her recollections of their collaborations, their intimacies, their secrets and lies. I think it’s supposed to let me know I have her complete undivided attention—she told me that getting it all “out there” would be a vital part of my recovery process.

The book’s ending was a complete surprise and I have to admit that I jumped to the end at one point. I don’t know that this actually happened, but I’d like to think that he (or she) attracted some amount of attention. The suggested questions are intended to help your reading group find new and interesting angles and topics for your discussion.

But I’m sure you understand, having experienced the benefits of therapy yourself, that one has to be totally honest (no, what’s that word they use instead these days? It was like she got to know everything about Clive to eventually find that she never really knew him at all. That unfortunate Down Under accent gives her a rather no-nonsense type of voice, doesn’t it, to match her tall, athletic frame, like I imagine a PE mistress might have. When Clive wins a prestigious music award and plans to renew his wedding vows, Sally decides that he must suffer for dumping her.

I think this would have been an excellent short story or novella, but was a bit too drawn out and incessantly depressing for novel length. Why use a nondescript, incognito, private process server when I can send a Sheriff in a police vehicle and a uniform and attract all sorts of attention? Clive promises Sally the world, as people tend to do when having an affair, and renigs on everything after five years, saying his wife deserves another chance and he wants to make it work.
