Please note, this is "do it yourself-DIY" kit, you will need to assemble the boat and to paint it yourself! Hi everyone, this is Beth from Twinkl and today I'm going to show you how you can make your very own paper Viking longboat. Viking longships were long, slender boats that the Vikings used to travel on the seas. They have a long history in Scandinavia and were used as early as the fourth century BC. The Design of Viking Longships How can I use the Viking Longship 3D Model?: Rotate the Viking Longship on your screen to see it from all angles. Look carefully at the details and try to identify what each part is made from. Can you count the oars? How is this ship different to others you have seen? Why might there only be one sail? Meanwhile her brother had chosen to use the Hobbycraft designs suggested by their teachers - and also needed the occasional extra hand.

In Viking times, ships were so important that the chiefs and the richest nobles were either burned or buried with their ship.In the oldest Viking stories, known as sagas, the warriors would travel incredible distances in their boats and used chants to keep up morale when the rain and wind were beating down on them. Often, their Viking sailing chants would be used to tell stories about their favourite battles or adventures and to tell the stories of their gods as well as how their world was created. The hull of a Viking longship was made from planks of timber, usually oak. These strips were overlayed and nailed together in a method known as the clinker method. This made the hull very strong. To make the hull watertight, tar was mixed with materials such as wool, moss or animal hair and these were pressed into any spaces between the planks. The hull was very shallow. This allowed Viking longships to travel close to beaches or into shallow rivers sometimes no more than a metre deep. This Viking longboat template comes complete with step-by-step instructions on creating this excellent paper model, including where to cut, glue and fold. Prow: The prow (at the front of the ship) was often decorated with a skilfully carved dragon or snake head to make people fearful. Longships were long elegant craft used by The Vikings to cross the North Sea, first on raiding missions and later to explore and settle in Engand, Ireland, Iceland and beyond. They were a wooden construction with a shallow Draft which meant they could be rowed up shallow rivers as well as across the sea, powered by oars and their large square woollen sail. They could also land on beaches and were light enough to be carried when necessary and tipped upside down to use as a temporary shelter.

I printed an A4 version and 9year-old cut that out and tapped it together with masking tape as a prototype. If you're feeling inspired about Viking longships and are after some KS2-friendly teaching resources, then look no further.Long Serpent' and 'Snake of the Sea' are some examples of the types of names that Vikings gave to their ships. Another fantastic feature was that the longboat was double-ended. This meant that the Vikings could reverse without having to turn the boat around. The shallow draft (distance between the water and the lowest point of the vessel) meant that longships could navigate through shallow waters with a depth of just 1 metre. This allowed the Vikings to land on beaches before jumping out to fight.
