Nora Roberts has always been THAT author for me. The author that you know no matter what mood you were in, her books would be just right. But for some unexplainable reason, I have not read one of her books in such a long time. So when I received The Witness as a gift from my wonderful friend, I dove right in. And, as sure as the sun rises in the East, the book was perfect in every way. At the heart of “Identity” lies the exploration of personal identity and the power of self-discovery. Abigail’s journey from a woman plagued by amnesia to one who reclaims her true self is both captivating and empowering. Roberts deftly portrays the complexities of identity formation, highlighting how our past experiences shape us and how we can overcome adversity to forge our own path. What didn't work quite as well as the diversion that the storyline takes with the Blake family and their out-of-control son. While this was more germane to Brooks Gleason's (Abigail's love interest) narrative, I don't think it really tied very well into the main plot of Abigail, what and who she was running from, and I'm not sure it was that important to Brooks' characterization. Even at the end, I wasn't convinced that it was necessary to the story. More than anything, it was just added local color.

I agree with Jane that I don’t think that Abigail/Elizabeth had Aspberger’s – she was socially stunted and awkward – from her mother’s weired upbringing, her accelerated learning and her distance from people as she was on the run for 12 years. I loved Brooks – his affable charm was like the masculine version of the velvet steamroller.

Abigail (what Liz is know as now) learns that being alive is not the same as having a life. She finds a man (Brooks) who loves her even after he finds out what she is running from. I'm so glad she found a man that loved and wanted to protect her...even more important is that he let her protect herself and him. There was one other character who played a major role in the book and I feel is worth a mention, Abigail’s dog Bert. He was as much a part of the story as Brooks and Abigail, and I found myself looking forward to the parts of the book where he was present. In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better “when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance” ( Booklist, starred review). Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Elizabeth/Abigail’s and Brooks’ story. Elizabeth has her one fit of rebellion when she is 16 and she ends up witnessing a double murder. Years later, and now Abigail, she meets the chief of police in the small town she now lives in. Brooks intrigued by the mysterious woman living all alone with her huge guard dog and carrying a gun, and he ends up pushing his way into her life. Abigail can’t seem to say no to pushy Brooks or his mother even though she knows that she needs to be cautious. There are some suspenseful scenes, some small town drama, some sweet moments, and a few sexy times…and they get a HFN ending.

This book has a great HEA where the girl gets the guy and the bad guys go down...but I was a little worried at the end...whew! The Witness” has vividly drawn and fleshed-out characters, wonderful descriptions, fantastic secondary characters, and a secondary plot that is as fascinating as the main story. I loved watching Abigail grow, but I appreciated the fact that Ms. Roberts did not change Abigail too much and turn her into someone she wasn’t meant to be. To be honest, I'm a bit mean giving this two stars, but on a comparative level to the books I would give three stars, it falls a little bit flat. And yet I still loved every illogical, far fetched bit of it. And look forward to reading it again in a year or so when I have forgotten every bit of it.DNF for me. I loved the first 25% where the young Elizabeth breaks free from her controlling mother and witnesses a murder. Elizabeth and her mother have argued for the first time. After Dr. Fitch leaves for a medical convention, Elizabeth goes to a mall for the first time, shops, and runs into a girl she once knew in school. They come up with a plan for a crazy night out, using false ID’s, going to a club and hoping to meet cute guys. But, this night does not turn out the way it was supposed to. Elizabeth is a witness to a horrible crime. She is taken into protective custody but through another equally horrible set of circumstances, she is forced to run on her own.

I will definately listen to The Witness again, if not possible 3 or 4 times due to the fact that it is written and preformed at such a level that it's a pure joy to listen to. The disease is an addiction to romance books. And it is really DARN hard to find romance by authors who know how to string 2 sentences together. Nora Roberts knows how to do that. But. And while loyal readers will enjoy the better quality over the past couple of works, still this is a definite rip off of the Dragon Tattoo (minus the tattoo) main character. Still the writing is tight and crisp and plot is not quite predictable. It held my interest more than the last 2 trilogies did and worth the credit for those of us who appreciate Roberts when she's writing well. Heat level: Mild. They have some mild tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

If you are new to the romance novel genre and not sure what author you’ll like, take a trip to your local library before buying the book. This will help you get an idea of the authors and their styles before you build your personal library up with the genre. Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man's seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. She was happy, she realized, as she marked off her plot with string and stakes. Really happy. With spring, with work, with her home. With Brooks. Had she been really happy before? Surely there had been moments...’ Typical Nora. Heroine is bestest/smartest ever, with an understated beauty and the ability to handle firearms/hand-to-hand combat like a Navy Seal, with a tragic secret/life predicament that only the hero, with his charm, good looks and supportive family, can save her from, with her own help, that is. Nora doesn’t do weak women.
