The characters were also a big draw for me. The main character consistently plays on his age, but rather than it being "I'm too old to be embarrassed about these things," it's "Oh my god this is so embarrassing I'm too old to be doing this," which creates a really fun energy. His loud, difficult characteristics play well off of the love interest's more subdued personality. Their dialogue also works very well together. Soon to be approaching his 40s, 39-year-old Nozue feels his life is at a standstill, and because of his age, he feels he is at a point where he cannot take risks and change his life. As such, he continues to decline promotions at his job and romantic advances from other women. In an attempt to inspire him to move forward, Nozue's 29-year-old subordinate, Togawa, begins taking him to restaurants frequented by women, giving him new first-time experiences at his age. As the two spend more time together on what Togawa has called their "anti-aging experiment", Nozue becomes closer to Togawa while wondering why he is insistent on making him happy. Nozue grows fond of him, but he becomes unsure due to their gender, difference in age, and social standing. One day, Togawa confesses to Nozue that he has loved him ever since he inspired him to have a positive outlook towards life during his job interview. After reflecting, Nozue comes to accept his feelings for Togawa and the two become a couple. This is a basic slow-burn romance between a middle-aged man and his work subordinate. The romance progresses slowly, but the plot never feels slow -- the actual events of the story are well paced and fall into line with the heightening tension. It feels good, it has a satisfying ending, it's just overall nice. While the plot isn't necessarily stunning, it's pretty good. It has been serialized in the yaoi manga magazine ihr Hertz since January 31, 2019. A live-action television drama adaptation was broadcast from June 13, 2022, to July 4, 2022.Just a more personal slant, but as a trans person, I actually read the main character as trans. He regularly expresses desire to have grown up as a woman, and multiple times starts thoughts with "If I were a woman..." This lead me to read this story as an older person, who has accepted that they will never actually transition, gets to live out some of the aspects of girlhood they have always wanted. I understand that this was probably not the author's intent, but it made the story that much sweeter to me. Nozue feels he has reached a point in his life where there is no point of progressing further, as he continues to turn down chances to advance in both his professional and personal lives. He confides this in his 29-year-old subordinate, Togawa, and jokes about being a young girl to feel the excitement of life again. Togawa unexpectedly takes him to a diner, where he has his first experience eating a pancake. Nozue learns he can still have new experiences at his age, while Togawa shares that he has respected him ever since he encouraged him to be positive during his job interview. Where Nozue states he is already in his forties and past the age for romance, Togawa speaks how he does not think Nozue finds it annoying, so much as frightening. Mentioning the idea of Nozue falling in love, being promoted, to getting entrusted with new work, then taking on a heavy responsibility, and even eating pancakes, Togawa feels it is all too daunting for him. Detailing how he is too consumed with work before turning forty, so then Nozue realized he had nothing, Togawa raises how he cannot figure out what he needs, or wants to do. Continuing that Nozue opening up gives him anxiety, Togawa feels he finds it scary that he is nearing the end of his thirties without having changed a bit.
