True Romance: Limited Edition** (UK only Zavvi-exclusive Steelbook) ( US via Zavvi/ UK via Zavvi) – 7/19/21 – N4K, DV That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia)... but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence. The film's meticulously restored picture and sound, under the supervision of American Zoetrope and Paramount Pictures, includes a new beginning and ending, as well as changes to scenes, shots, and music cues. An amazing array of talent once again reteamed to bring this film together. Not only do we have Oscar-worthy turns from Pacino, Keaton, and Duvall, we also see the arrival of Robert De Niro in an Oscar-winning turn as the young Vito Corleone. However, as great as everyone is in this film, it’s John Cazale who always stands out for me. The Godfather franchise is often cited as the rise and fall of Michael Corleone specifically - but an equally important and perhaps more tragic character is Cazale’s Fredo. Maybe it’s also because Cazale only made five films in his sadly short life, but this round as Fredo guts me. The middle child, he represents inept potential. He never got that moment to shine. He failed to protect his father. He failed at casinos. He’s too meek to be Sonny and he’s not clever enough to be Michael. He desperately wants to leave his mark within the family but he’s always the one that needed to be taken care of. We never got to see Fredo achieve anything resembling greatness and we never got to fully appreciate Cazale’s full breadth of talent as an actor. With five incredible performances (in five Best Picture nominated films) - I feel this is Cazale’s best role and deserved far more recognition. Bug (2006) (US/UK) – Officially cancelled, after being first announced by KLSC but then DELAYED by William Friedkin – N4K, DV As a bonus—and thus further stressing Coppola’s preference for the new Coda version of The Godfather: Part III—the original and 1991 cuts of the third film are included on a separate 4K disc, and to Coppola’s credit, he commissioned restorations of these versions as well. A handful of new extras have been prepared for this release, including some behind-the-scenes footage of the first Godfather and remembrances by set photographer Steve Shapiro, but most exciting are the extended looks at the arduous restoration process. Everyone involved takes justifiable pride in the careful work that was done for this release; particularly revealing are comparisons of the new transfers to the 2007 restorations, themselves lauded at the time but now wholly obsolete. A slew of previously released extras are also included, ranging from deleted scenes from all three films to retrospective documentaries on the first Godfather’s complex and fraught production to the impact of the trilogy. Overall

Together, the films tell the epic story of the Corleone family, one of five that control organized crime in America in the mid-1940s. The Godfather opens with patriarch Vito (Marlon Brando) at the height of his power, celebrating the wedding of his daughter Connie (Talia Shire) and the return of his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) home from fighting in World War II. Vito’s eldest, Sonny (James Caan), is poised to step into his father’s shoes with the help of Vito’s adopted son and consigliere, Tom (Robert Duvall). The idealistic Michael has just met the girl (Diane Keaton) he plans to marry, and has ambitious plans for a legitimate career in business or politics. Meanwhile, Fredo (John Cazale) is also there, quietly undervalued by all of them. But when Vito denies rival families involved in the narcotics trade the protection of his paid-for political connections (because he believes drugs are dishonorable), they try to assassinate him, and Michael is drawn ever more deeply into a life his father had hoped he’d escape. There’s been a lot of stories told about who is responsible for what and why The Godfather came together so well. As one of the finest pieces of American filmmaking, if you’re discussing if it’s all because of Mario Puzo’s great story or if it’s Francis Ford Coppola being a meticulously detailed director or if it’s because of Robert Evans’ own claim for responsibility, it’s important to remember the film is great. It’s a perfect collaboration of amazing talent. There was a lot of conflict during its production but like steel sharpening steel - it only made the film better.Restoration Comparisons – If viewing the films wasn’t revolutionary enough, here you can see the clear differences and the work done; titled The Godfather: Scan Element Comparisons, and The Godfather II: Scan Element Comparisons, 5 minutes each. In what is undeniably one of the best sequels ever made, Francis Ford Coppola continues his epic Godfather trilogy with this saga of two generations of power within the Corleone family. Coppola, working once again with the author Mario Puzo, crafts two interwoven stories that work as both prequel and sequel to the original. One shows the humble Sicilian beginnings and New York rise of a young Don Vito, now played in an Oscar®-winning* performance for Best Supporting Actor by Robert De Niro. The other shows the ascent of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don. Reassembling many of the cast members who helped make The Godfather™, Coppola has produced a movie of staggering magnitude and vision; the film received eleven Academy Awards® nominations, winning six including Best Picture of 1974.

In the annals of sequel history, The Godfather: Part IIsomehow manages to be a monumental success. I’m someone who can’t jump into that debate of whether the first or the second film is better. They’re both incredible to me. They truly feel like one cinematic experience to the point that when they crafted The Godfather Sagacut for television editing the two films together chronologically, it was seamless. My lone complaint with this 4K release of the trilogy is we don’t get that multipart re-edit of the first two films. Regardless, it’s very difficult for me to watch The Godfatherwithout jumping right into The Godfather: Part II. They’re one story." 5/5The way Coppola and his actors approach performance brings up the controversy of Sofia Coppola’s casting as Michael’s doomed daughter, Mary. Her line readings are sometimes flat, and at other times awkward. But in contrast to the other players, she’s startlingly pure, her unseasoned candor making her tragic function in the story more heart-wrenching. There’s an unexpected feeling of truth as she delivers her last line (“Dad?”) on the steps outside the opera house, breaking up the theatrical masquerade over which Michael has presided. Coppola gives his tragedy a twist that goes beyond King Lear, one of his film’s models. Michael, unlike Lear weeping at the death of his beloved Cordelia, doesn’t die of grief. Rather, it’s implied that he lingers on for years, alone in the company of despair and sorrow. Sure, Sonny is a hothead, but it’s calm and cool Michael who ends up ascending to the throne by the end. The film is the story of Michael going from a decorated World War II veteran who tells his girlfriend “That’s my family, that’s not me” in the beginning to a Mafia don who rules with an iron fist and closes his wife out of his business dealings.
