Hey Carol - welcome to the wonderful world of air frying 🙂 my best tip for beginners is to think of your air fryer as a mini oven as opposed to an oil-less deep fryer. Anything you can make in the oven you can make in the air fryer, and the principles are the same. E.g. if you're making roasted vegetables, you'd coat them in a little oil. Some people use spray oils but I never do. Just throw whatever I'm making in a bowl and coat it in a little olive oil before popping it in the air fryer. Please note that there are few exceptions to this rule (you don’t need to turn “boiled” eggs, for example), but in most cases, turning will lead to the most even cooking. Always test meat for doneness with a meat thermometer.

What is Different About an Air Fryer?

For a single individual or couple, a 3 to 5-quart option is fine. If you are making upwards of 6 servings at a time, you will want the 6 quart or larger options. Below are some of my favorite brands of air fryers that I know are high-quality and will be a good investment. If you need an easy way to roast your favorite vegetables without turning on the oven, the air fryer is the perfect tool. It cuts baking time considerably and gives great texture to the vegetables without the addition of fats and oils. Plus, you can roast it in the summer months when turning on the oven would heat up the house too much! SEAFOOD The simple key to preheating food in the air fryer is when you want your food to be crispy, make sure to preheat for 3 minutes before you start cooking. Remember to stop halfway through cooking to rotate the food inside the air fryer basket. Sometimes it is a bit of trial and error, but I recommend starting in smaller time increments and working your way up a few minutes at a time until the food is at your desired doneness. Air frying is much healthier than deep frying. Because air fryers cook food using convection, you don’t need much oil to get food super crispy and delicious. Just toss or spray whatever food you’re cooking lightly with oil, and you’ll be in business! To convert an oven recipe to air frying, reduce the temperature by 25°F, and cut the cooking time by about 20-25%. This is a general rule of thumb and may need adjusting based on what you’re cooking.

The air fryer is basically a convection oven but smaller. It is designed to be convenient for smaller kitchens and to sit on a countertop while also being easy to put away out of sight. They come in a variety of sizes from ideal for a single person all the way to large enough for 6 to 8 servings. If you are struggling with your new kitchen gadget you are not alone. Everyone feels the same way when using devices for the first time. I would encourage you to use your air fryer because that’s the only way you can master it.” As long as the food will fit in the air fryer, you can cook it in there.
