Description

Because of their respect for learning and the dissemination of knowledge, the Chapter is known to have close ties with certain elements of the Adeptus Mechanicus in their region of the galaxy and often gains access to stores of more advanced equipment and Imperial technology as a result. Ullendorff never published an article about his encounter with the ark. He "simply didn't want to hurt the feelings of the Ethiopians," said Parfitt, noting that Ullendorff worked extensively in Ethiopia, even becoming a personal friend of the emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. The 2nd company is configured as normal for an Unforgiven Chapter, although it seldom deploys as an entire company, instead being parceled out to other companies and battle formations to provide heavy reconnaissance and interdiction capability. It is not unknown for members of the 2nd company to deploy as jump infantry, instead of being vehicle mounted, should the terrain or mission dictate it. These people were largely left to their own devices and died in their droves. The strongest survived, and even thrived. All off-moon supplies were delivered to small heavily fortified facilities garrisoned by “trustees” and reinforced by squads of the nascent Guardians and commanded by Chaplains of the Chapter, who oversaw the meagre medical technology available and the distribution of food supplements. Within two generations an extremely complex society had grown up on the moons, and the work of the Chaplains had instilled a sense of awe and devotion to the Imperial Creed and of the Guardians of the Covenant within the populations of what were essentially man-made death worlds. The Guardians ceased the importation of prisoners early in the 36th Millennium once the population of the moons had become self-sustaining, the sons of the Mortikah V death moons became the future of the Guardians of the Covenant.

What differs with the Guardians is that it is that, due to a cataclysmic battle against the Eldar of Craftworld Saim-Hann in the 38th Millenium, the Guardians are unable to field a 1st company made up entirely of terminator squads. Over the centuries since their loss, the Chapter has assembled enough TDA suits to equip 14 full squads of the 1st company. Cloaks and hoods are worn by all ranks, but the Veteran Guardians of the Covenant and the Chapter's Inner Circle are most commonly seen wearing the crimson cloth, because they have learned enough about the Dark Angels Legion's history, and thus their shame, prior to obtaining their rank within the Chapter. Thousands of homeowners could, like the Aldisses, be hit by unexpected costs because of antique laws buried in their title deeds. Worse, they can be held liable for arrears accrued by previous owners. I asked if the ark in Ethiopia resembles the one described in the Bible: almost four feet long, just over two feet high and wide, surmounted by two winged cherubs facing each other across its heavy lid, forming the "mercy seat," or footstool for the throne of God. Paulos shrugged. "Can you believe that even though I'm head of the Ethiopian church, I'm still forbidden from seeing it?" he said. "The guardian of the ark is the only person on earth who has that peerless honor." He looked at me with what appeared to be tender sympathy and said: "We don't need proof because it's a fact. The monks here have passed this down for centuries."

From the very beginning, the Guardians saw themselves as warrior-monks and conducted themselves accordingly. This became even more a core part of being a Guardian of the Covenant when the first generations of recruits from the Mortikah V moons became initiated into the Chapter, where strenuous and ascetic practice was used to temper and focus the extreme violence bred by their birth environment.

The teachings Moses had received from his mother during the few short years she was employed as his nurse were so engrained in his consciousness that he could not forget that there was only one true God, who had covenanted with his people, Israel, that they would be a special people unto him—instruments of his power. And all the learning Moses received at the hands of his Egyptian tutors was as naught compared with this truth. It might well be said that Jochebed was the true deliverer of Israel, for she taught Moses, without which there would have been no deliverance. They shall make an ark of acacia wood," God commanded Moses in the Book of Exodus, after delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. And so the Israelites built an ark, or chest, gilding it inside and out. And into this chest Moses placed stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments, as given to him on Mount Sinai.

As a guest of the king, surrounded by idol worshipers, if Sarah were ever to falter in the worship of Jehovah, this would be the time. But she did not! She emerged not only as a virtuous wife, but as a faithful worshiper of the one true God, grateful to him for the protection he had given her against the many evils of that court. The developer is supposed to issue an “assumption of liability” notice when applying for planning permission and pay the CIL once they’ve notified the council that works have commenced. Abbay and I made our way toward the office of the Neburq-ed, Aksum's high priest, who works out of a tin shed at a seminary close by the ark chapel. As the church administrator in Aksum, he would be able to tell us more about the guardian of the ark. One of the first things that caught my eye in Addis Ababa, the country's capital, was an enormous concrete pillar topped by a giant red star—the sort of monument to communism still visible in Pyongyang. The North Koreans built this one as a gift for the Derg, the Marxist regime that ruled Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991 (the country is now governed by an elected parliament and prime minister). In a campaign that Derg officials named the Red Terror, they slaughtered their political enemies—estimates range from several thousand to more than a million people. The most prominent of their victims was Emperor Haile Selassie, whose death, under circumstances that remain contested, was announced in 1975.

Rachel must not fail! Nor did she fail, for Joseph emerged not only as a champion of righteousness but as one who was noble, kind, forgiving, virtuous, and faithful to his God and to his people. He was a credit to a noble mother. Even though he was next to the youngest of his father’s children, the birthright was his, to be realized through his son Ephraim.
