Description

Your children can either highlight the adjectives within the sentences or use the word bank to insert the adjectives to complete the sentences. Your class will underline the letters that should be capital letters and add in the full stops to punctuate the sentences. The vivid text and beautiful illustrations also helps to tell a powerful story of something we take for granted.

His first picture book The Most Important Gift of All illustrated by Karin Littlewood, was nominated for The Kate Greenaway Medal in 2006. A girl named lila and her famlly had to stay in their house because the sun bet down on the Kanyan vilige.Your class will read through the sentences and highlight words that are homophones or they can choose the homophone that completes the sentences. This book can be a really good resource for Year two children to share as a class to engage in thought processes. Your class can read through and tick the statements to see if it was used successfully to persuade the sky.

Lila and the Secret of Rain is a story about a Kenyan village that is experiencing a dry spell and the little girl who makes it rain by whispering to the sky. Also, for older students, the placement of symbols, like the sun and later the dark clouds, within the illustrations would prove interesting for analysis. We have included a blank template with questions and things to reflect on, as well as multiple choice. You could use this word mat containing some of the key vocabulary from the story to support the teaching of Lila and the Secret of Rain by David Conway.Your class must include capital letters for: the beginning of sentences, opening speech and proper nouns. In this activity, we look at how Lila tries (and succeeds) at persuading the sky to stop the sun from shining and start the rain. Really enjoyed how the stories Lila found to be the saddest stories she knew but when she was honest and told of how she was suffering under the sun, then the rain came… Good to partner with a few other rain related books! Some pages the texts is on top of the illustration, on other pages it is isolated to a section of negative space.

We have taken some of the lovely vocabulary used in The Secret of Rain and created three resources to help your Year 1 | Year 2 class understand the words used in context of the story as well as looking at a few definitions. This resource pack will ensure that your pupils include all of the important features when writing a diary entry while saving you hours of preparation time. I loved this story because it highlighted a young person who does something difficult and brave for others, rather than just thinking of herself. There are lots of colourful images that enable children to visualize the difficulties that the villagers face.

This is an amazing book that encourages children to consider that others live differently than we do. Its about bravery, courage and hope, narrated beautifully through expressive illustrations by Jude Daly. I think reading this book will support discussion of cultural similarities and differences, as well as geographical impacts on a society. Follow the story of Lila and her village in Kenya, and how she saves her people from drought by learning the secret of rain from her grandfather. This book book poses so many questions to it's younger audience about Kenya, the water cycle, Lila's actions and not giving in on something you may be wishing for.
