These datasheets – as they’re referred to in Warhammer 40,000 – contain the stats and profiles for all the units in the set and a wee bit ( YOUR SCOTLAND IS SHOWING ;) – Editor) of fluff explaining what they are and what they do in their respective armies. This 184-page tome includes the full range of rules sections found in the Warhammer 40,000 Core Book , from all 39 missions split between open, narrative, and matched play, to the innovative Crusade campaign system. A great piece of artwork makes it very clear that this is Necrons vs Space Marines whilst really capturing the feel of the setting. I won’t dive into each sprue the way he has since I don’t think there’s much I could add to what he’s already said, but I’ll give some of my impressions from building the models. The Elite Manual included is identical to the Recruit Manual, in that it introduces the setting, Factions and Warhammer 40,000 game in accessible, bite-sized chunks.

Sure, a few more minis would have been nice, but you can’t argue with the saving you will be making on these sets. The main attraction of 40k is the miniatures, but there are also many video games, board games, books, ect.

Included in the set are the Assault Intercessors, Necron Warriors and Scarab Swarms from the Recruit Edition, as well as the new additions of a squad of Outriders and Skorpekh Destroyers. Once everything in the box has been explained and the game universe introduced to you, you’re given building instructions for the Assault Intercessors and Necron Warrios. This set also replaces the Lieutenant and Royal Warden with a Space Marine Captain and Necron Overlord, giving both sides a little bit more hitting power.These are usually far more visually impressive than they have any business being for the function they serve.

They’re designed for new players in particular, but if you wanted to double down on a couple of units from the Indomitus Box Set, these starters are also a way to do it for less. There’s also a shallow narrative threading these Missions together, serving as a very subtle way of giving new players a taste of campaign gaming.

Once you’re confident of your mastery of the basics, the Recruit Manual goes on to suggest some additional units with which to expand the Space Marines and Necrons forces in the set, and even provides you with their datasheets and a new mission to play once you’ve done so!

The included Elite Manual contains simplified rules for the miniatures in this set, as well as a series of 6 linked scenarios making it so easy to start playing.If you just want to learn the core rules you could probably go Recruit, but remember that the extra units you get are high movement high damage output and so introduce the idea of battlefield roles and illustrate what higher performing units do.
