Description

Other benefits of HDMI include functions such as HDMI-CEC (HDMI Consumer Electronics Control), which allows you to control numerous devices with one remote. For example, connect a soundbar to your television through an HDMI-CEC compatible port and the soundbar can turn on and off with your television and be controlled by a single remote. HDMI is a newer digital audio/video interface developed and promoted by the consumer electronics industry. DVI and HDMI have the same electrical specifications for their TMDS and VESA/DDC twisted pairs. However HDMI and DVI differ in several key ways. DVI was the result of a concerted effort to standardise digital video transfer around 1999. This was a time when DVD players were the most popular form of home video entertainment, with VHS in terminal decline. Also, home computing was becoming more normalised thanks to Microsoft and Apple, and flat-screen LCD TVs were beginning to outsell traditional cathode ray tube TVs and monitors. Blu-ray was still a few years away, and it would be almost a decade before the likes of Netflix would be streaming high-quality video over the internet.

DisplayPort 1-1.1a is able to output 144Hz at 1080p, while 1.2-1.2a can output 1440p at 144Hz, 1.3 outputs up to 120Hz at 4K, and 1.4 can output 144Hz at 4K using Display Stream Compression (DSC). As competing standards, they share a lot of features in their various incarnations. DisplayPort can also carry audio signals on a single cable, and the latest release supports up to 8K resolution at 60 hertz with high dynamic range. The next version is expected later this year.

DisplayPort: 4K at 144Hz with audio and video capabilities Until HDMI 2.0 became a standard, DisplayPort had it beat when it came to high resolutions. DisplayPort 1.2 has long been able to carry 3,840 x 2,160-resolution video at 60fps (or a refresh rate of 60Hz) and is the most common DisplayPort specification on most consumer monitors and devices now. This has 17.28Gbits/sec of bandwidth. The male DVI connector plugs into your device’s female DVI output, and you connect a standard VGA cable to the female VGA connector.

He’s never happier than when he’s tinkering with his home-built desktop or soldering a new keyboard. On How-To Geek, Michael covers PCs, gaming, and general entertainment. However, there may be better ways to connect your devices, and you might have plenty of other questions about using DVI. Dual-link DVI connections aren’t widely used, but you would need a special dual-link cable if your device does have this interface. Can You Convert DVI to HDMI?Some DVI-D sources use non-standard extensions to output HDMI signals including audio (e.g. ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series). [17] Some multimedia displays use a DVI to HDMI adapter to input the HDMI signal with audio. Exact capabilities vary by video card specifications. In December 2010, Intel, AMD, and several computer and display manufacturers announced they would stop supporting DVI-I, VGA and LVDS-technologies from 2013/2015, and instead speed up adoption of DisplayPort and HDMI. [18] [19] They also stated: "Legacy interfaces such as VGA, DVI and LVDS have not kept pace, and newer standards such as DisplayPort and HDMI clearly provide the best connectivity options moving forward. In our opinion, DisplayPort 1.2 is the future interface for PC monitors, along with HDMI 1.4a for TV connectivity". It doesn’t send audio, so you must make a separate sound connection between the source device and the speaker system. Our USB cablesare another handy household essential, letting you link up your PC or laptop with devices such as your camera or scanner for easy data transfer. Thunderbolt: an interface that has the same form factor as Mini DisplayPort (in version 1 and 2) or USB-C (in version 3 and 4) but combines PCI Express (PCIe) and DisplayPort (DP) into one serial signal, permitting the connection of PCIe devices in addition to video displays. It provides DC power as well.

When referring to DVI vs VGA, both connectors work in the same way: the device has female ports and the connector cable has male terminals. The signal is transmitted from the source device through the port to the connector cable, and then to the destination that is the display device.
