Description

I ran as fast as I could back to the house, and my one of my cousins was running in too, he saw the same thing. For seven years, Geoffroy Delorme says, he lived in the forest with wild deer, sleeping alongside them beneath the trees, eating acorns, lichens and wild garlic, and fleeing with them when the hunters came.

Geoffroy's first language is French and we decided that an excerpt would be the best way to introduce people to his riveting book, translated by Shaun Whiteside.

Charles Foster’s Being a Beast saw him live like a range of creatures, from otters and swifts, in a tragicomical rejoinder to the challenge thrown out by philosophers: “What is it like to be …” Such books are encounters, more than anything else, with sentience. In this splendid memoir, journalist Sinclair, director of the French Huffington Post, explores a chapter of her family history colored by Vichy France and Nazi theft.

He starts by observing the animals’ behavior, to “mimic the way the squirrels look after themselves” and the way deer rest. Yet one suspects this is the only kind of testimony that could come from someone who has, in many ways, eschewed the human world.

The processed foods that I find in the family fridge are just as appetizing as before, but I find them increasingly difficult to digest. I found this an intriguing book: how many people, after all, would go to this extent in their love for wildlife? Originally published in 1977 and having since gone out of print, Pugliese’s first and only novel is a kaleidoscopic portrait of a city on the brink of disaster.

Another contraction, then another, when, all of a sudden, out comes the young fawn, falling to the ground: bam! He witnesses births and deaths, loves and battles, ostracism and friendship over the cycles of their lives. But Delorme does, and you can see his connection with not just the deer, but other woodland creatures too, like foxes, badgers and boars. This book was fantastical, heartwarming, (and at moments, heartbreaking), informative (but not in a dense way) and un-put-down-able.What I think was missing from the novel was the author’s decision to exclude personal details from his past in a more detailed way. The way the wildlife acted, the figure that we came across that the animals had to have ran from, and then the scream of which I can only find references to happens to be the Banshee. quand on voit les dégâts de la chasse, qu’on comprend l’impact au niveau social du chasseur et de l’humain qui ne protège pas les bois, quand il doit rendre compte de toutes ces terres qui sont réduites à blanc, on comprend qu’il veuille nous convaincre à traiter bois et animaux autrement.
