Kaz regains consciousness in the prison wagon and panics when he feels the bodies of the other prisoners pressing against him. Inej talks to calm him down. When they arrive at the Ice Court, Kaz notices the bodies of five men skewered on pikes. He recognizes them as members of Pekka Rollins’s gang. He reflects that they don’t have to worry about the rival gang beating them to Bo Yul-Bayur. Kaz assures himself that none of the bodies are Pekka Rollins. He wants to be the one to kill Rollins. He has extreme difficulty expressing his emotions, even to those close to him, thanks to his PTSD. It takes him a great deal of time and effort to realize and admit his genuine feelings for Inej. Kaz struggles to come to terms with being both Dirtyhands, who can do what needs to be done, and Kaz Rietveld, who can love Inej. Since Shadow and Bone started, and the Grishaverse fans learned that the Crows would be incorporated into the show, an underlying question has always been: When are we getting the Six of Crows story on screen? The first book in the Crow’s duology is beloved by fans, and the Ice Court heist is one of the most iconic storylines in the series, so seeing it on screen would be a dream. While there wasn’t much from the first book about these thieves in Season 2 of Shadow and Bone, the finale did clearly set up the stakes for the Ice Court Hiest, and if you’ve read the books, you know that the foundation has been laid for an epic adventure in Fjerda with our favorite crew from Ketterdam.

Kaz has a limp and uses a cane with a crow's head as its handle, which also doubles as a weapon. His limp is due to jumping off a roof of a bank at fourteen, breaking his right leg, an injury that never fully healed properly. The severity of his limp varies, depending on factors such as cold weather and stress. Genya Safin offered to heal his leg, but Kaz refused, as he views his limp as his greatest strength. When asked by Inej what Kaz's tell is in a fight, he claims that his opponents never look past his limp, giving Kaz the element of surprise on his side. Jesper and Wylan encounter guards just as several Tidemakers materialize out of thin air and draw the blood out of the guards. They begin to do the same to Jesper and Wylan, but Jesper manages to kill them with his own Grisha ability. Wallis, Max (November 13, 2015). "10 best fantasy novels". Independent .
