Amidst birthday joy, thesis submission anxiety, and bittersweet farewells, this book was placed in my hands by my beloved friends. Being good at friendship, which is not quite the same as being a good friend, is a core self-belief that many of us (often women) cling to as evidence that we are, in some important way, both lovable and likable. Sinto que estamos finalmente a perceber que nem todo o amor é romântico e que as relações platónicas tem um peso igual ou maior na nossa vida. I do think there’s room for a follow up, because aside from the workplace or toddler groups, I have no idea how to meet friends when you’re older.

Intertwined within the book are the "Friendship Tapes," various interviews with other people about their feelings in friendships. Contudo, não vou negar que esperava que o livro abordasse ainda mais vertentes da amizade, algo que só não é possível porque lá está, é baseado na experiência pessoal da autora. My only real problem with this book (other than the fact that I didn’t think it was possible for a person to have THIS many friends), is the amount of tangents and metaphors packed into each chapter. It can be quite a minefield at times especially as you get older, but also I know what I want from friendships these days, so I suppose it’s a bit easier in some ways. I'd love to read a considered, thoughtful book on friendship by an author who really has something to say. From the journalist and author of How to Fail comes a disarmingly honest and perceptive investigation into the nature of friendship, prompted by Day's lockdown reassessment of her need for a large group of companions. The book is an easy read about friendship and I think it's very much a book that will be appreciated more by women, I'm excited for some female friends to read it so I can hear their opinions about it.

At that point you suddenly go oh yeah, she’s another professional victim, and the text loses authority as you notice how foggy her world is, and then it just gets gloomy. This book absolutely hit the spot for me, and it’s been a long time since a book has got me this good. The title of the book is not, as it turns out, some clever publisher’s gimmick; rather, it’s a bald confession of Day’s own recovery from codependency, in which her own self-worth was defined by the opinions of others. This book definitely made me think a lot about the people in my life - the past and current friends that I’ve had and the roles they’ve played. Elizabeth Day is the author of five novels and three works of non-fiction, including her Sunday Times bestselling novel Magpie , and hit memoir How to Fail . It had been fabulous day, to be fair I’ve never described a wedding as being a bit shit, but this wedding had been a lot of fun, partly down to the fact that I was able to spend time with friends I hadn’t seen in ages….

I spent a lot of my time reading this book and thinking "Yes that happened to me" or "OMG that's me" or "I do/did that", so I feel it's a sign of a good book when so much of it relates or I feel seen.So I said I wouldn't criticise the book for not being what I wanted it to be but then I went and did that anyway. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. What's less fascinating to me is Day's hand wringing about what text message she should send a shitty friend who she doesn't really like. Dealing with narcissistic lovers or recalcitrant teenagers has been deemed proper subject matter for academic psychologists and therapists for decades; how to cope with the potential ending of a friendship has, by comparison, been seen as rather trivial, just one of those things in life that we are supposed to navigate without guidance.
