Description

Bulleit Rye whiskey was introduced in March 2011. It is a whiskey high in rye compared to other rye releases. The mash bill has 95% rye and 5% malted barley and is produced in small batches. Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey The Woodford Reserve Rye whiskey was launched in 2015 as the third permanent addition to the core range. The rye whiskey uses a pre-prohibition style rye ratio to pay homage to history’s original rye whiskeys. Butterscotch, toasted grains, banana taffy and a touch coppery and some light hints of caramel syrup, malty sweetness and spearmint. The spice is so light I could just be imagining it from the nose. This is Woodford Reserve Rye whiskey, a rye whiskey released by Woodford Reserve, a subsidiary of Brown-Forman. This is bottled at 45.2% ABV, with no word on age or filtering. Let's get to it. Short, sweet finish. A-ha…here’s the spice. Bitter oak, pepper, some clove and a touch of cinnamon pair nicely with peach, honey and vanilla bean.

Long and filled with butterscotch, banana taffy and red fruit. Towards the end of the fade some rye spice, spearmint and a light dill shows up.

Palate: Medium bodied. Distinct tongue burn (I would have said this was 50% ABV), which starts out dry and slightly bitter, and then turns malty and sweet and mildly bitter (fruity bitters, though, like Angostura or Peychaud’s). Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Side by side, the difference in the mash bill is quite noticeable. The Bulleit is spicier with more pronounced cinnamon, pepper, and cloves. The Bulleit Rye brings a more cherry and vanilla sweetness when compared to the Woodford Reserve Rye.

Excerpt: Instead of hitting you over the head with heavy spice and cereal notes as many ryes do these days, these elements relax on the palate, chilling out with some malty milk-chocolate and tangy apricot. This one was well worth the wait. Finish: Medium-short in length. Spicy, with cinnamon red-hots and clove, fading into ginger (candied; dried). Not overly bitter on the finish. Light, sweet and fragrant - Woodford Reserve Rye carries plenty of notes of honey, peach, clove spice and a hint of pepper. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. So, I’ll first start by capturing my tasting notes for the Woodford Reserve Rye vs Bulleit Rye whiskey. In a way, it is a clash between two whiskey powerhouses, Diageo vs Brown Forman. Can there only be one champion? Or is there a place for both of these bottles in your collection? Burun : Tatlı tütün, karamel sedir, tarçın ve karabiber ilk aldığım kokular. Bunlara badem ezmesi, narenciye, muz, armut ve yanık şeker olarak adlanladırabileceğim tatlı notalar eşlik ediyor. Oldukça aromatik ve zengin. Sweet honey, more fruit like apple, pear, plum and peach, along with faint oak, a hint of pepper and rich cream. Not nearly as spicy as expected - this is not a bold rye.

There is a big difference in price between the two bottles. The Bulleit is nearly double the price in ZAR. That tips the scale in the Woodford Reserve direction. A great-tasting rye at an affordable price. I have not done a side-by-side whiskey comparison in months, and it is so much fun. So today, let me look at a rye comparison: Woodford Reserve Rye vs Bulleit Rye whiskey. Earlier this year, I tasted the Woodford Rye whiskey, and the bottle gave me so much inspiration for side-by-side comparison posts. In this Woodford Reserve Rye vs Bulleit Rye comparison, we’ve delved into the histories of these two powerhouse distillers and the distinctive characteristics of their rye whiskeys. While both are excellent choices, your preference may ultimately be your palate and budget. Years later, his great-great-grandson, Tom Bulleit, dreamt of continuing his ancestor’s distilling tradition, and in 1987, he created a small batch bourbon bearing the family name. Diageo owns the Bulleit brand. The bottles are modelled on old medicine bottles, with distinctive raised lettering. The label on the Bulleit Rye is green. Nose: Baking spices greet the nose, in classic rye fashion. Deeper in, there is a strong cherry liqueur aroma, plus marzipan, dry corn, and a malty-but-not-too-sweet grain presence. Beneath this is a vegetal layer of mild sweet grass and – weird – dill.Finish: The finish of this bourbon is long, with cereal sweetness, winter spices and oak tannins. The woodiness is definitely the star of this show with this bourbon, delivering a cigar box dryness that lingers on the tongue. There’s subtle notes of butterscotch that add a lovely sweetness to the mix. There’s more of the same baking spices – allspice, clove and nutmeg which add a pleasant tingle to the end of each sip. With some chewing and savouring, there’s still the same toasted nuttiness from the nose. It’s subtle, but as a self-declared peanut butter monster, I love it. Towards the end, there’s a herbal sort of minty flavour going on, with hints of dark chocolate, oak and citrus peel. These flavours lift things slightly, which is a nice departure from the nuts and rye heat. Overall, the palate is good, but not overly deep in flavour. Excerpt: It’s hard to say, but the lovely banana-vanilla combination dominates until baked pears, pumpkin bread, rye, and baking spices appear. A medium to long finish brings a bright cherry note. Unlike a lot of recent rye releases crowing about their “high-rye” mashbills, the Woodford Reserve Rye mashbill can only be called “low-rye”: 53% rye (the legal minimum is 51%), 33% corn, and 14% malted barley. Woodford Reserve claims this mashbill was chosen to maintain the house characteristics familiar from its bourbons, and is thus sweeter than most ryes. With no age statement on the bottle and the “straight whiskey” declaration, one must assume the rye is at or slightly above 4 years of age.

Augustus Bulleit produced the first Bulleit bourbon. He wanted to create a bourbon with a unique flavour profile and experimented with varying recipes until he found a whiskey he was happy with. He started his bourbon, which was available until he died in 1860. With some time to breathe, there are hints of toasted oak and sweet caramel mixed with warm spiciness from the rye. There’s a subtle smokiness too, which gives it an inviting aroma that draws you in for more. Not an exceptional nose, but pleasant none the less. Aromatics of leather, oak and cocoa develop as I swirl it around my palate before giving way to creamy notes of butterscotch and vanilla that balances everything out. Overall, the taste is softer and more delicate than the Elijah Craig. No necessarily better, just more varied and light.
