JPMorgan has 240,000 employees worldwide. One of them, managing director Jan Loeys, writes about investment strategy in a way that can sound like a subtle dig at how the other 239,999 choose to spend their days. There's a spying quality to this book--part of its appeal for me is that it feel like I've gained access to Alice Waters at home. And yet there was something a tiny bit disappointing in it. I suspect that it's a perfect book for someone who is just learning the basic cooking techniques. But for a more intermediate level cook, most of this is fairly familiar, and if you already own The Joy of Cooking, The Best Recipe, and A New Way to Cook, its territory is already covered.

Specifically, this shift means more work time for book writing, which I’m especially excited about. It’s truly where I feel like I can contribute my greatest good. What This Means For AoSOn the whole I think much of the interest and beauty in this book comes not only from the Zen principles, but from the way these principles are woven and integrated into the beautiful and ancient culture of Japan. I could imagine it being fleshed out into a much larger, more graphically appealing format.

One could argue that your bond fund should be global, but that would add foreign-currency risk that is generally not well compensated. If you then have strong views on what asset types, countries, or sectors to have more of than is in these broad funds — say you fancy Technology — you can simply add a Tech ETF to these two funds. It is harder when there are certain assets you want to have less of, or not have at all — say oil companies. You would need a fund that excludes oil companies, but that may not exist if there are not enough investors like you who do not want to hold oil. If such a fund does not exist, then you will have to build a portfolio bottom up by trying to buy all the other sectors, for which funds will surely not all be available. Hence, it is much easier to execute overweights than underweights in a simple portfolio. In short, you will do quite well with holding only two funds: a global equity one and a local bond one. This book is absolutely terrific for the seasoned cook and novice. In fact, as a twenty year-old newbie who grew up without a cook in the home, this book would have been a godsend and bumped me up to "competent" in a few weeks, rather than months/years. For one, one should not buy assets that are too complex to be easily understood as the risk is then that the asset will not be appropriate for one’s financial objectives. Second, the fewer the assets one has in one’s portfolio, the easier it is to judge risk on them, the easier it is to gauge one’s exposure, the easier it is to manage one’s portfolio, and the less time it takes. No, the recipes aren't low fat. In fact, many involve a bechemel and butter's her best friend: however, the very ground work of this book teaches the most rudimentary basic that most Americans seem to be missing: TASTE your food, love your food--value what you put in your body, love the taste, no matter how simple, and if it's not good, don't eat it. That I can’t remember one shot in my life where I manipulated a swing in the downswing and actually hit the shot I wanted. Instead, when you Let Go, the results can be amazing.Similarly, in chapter 8 he mentions "the indescribable intensity in the calligraphy of the Zen monk Ikkyu." I suppose a Japanese reader knows what this calligraphy looks like, but a Western reader could really use an illustration.

Zen: The Art of Simple Living makes the wisdom of the Buddha radically accessible' Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, author of Emotional Rescue and Rebel Buddha An indispensable resource for home cooks from the woman who changed the way Americans think about food. Our industry does seem to love complexity and to abhor simplicity. The more complex the financial world is seen to be, the more managers, analysts, traders, consultants, regulators, and risk managers feel they add value and expect to be paid. But there is a lot of benefit to the ultimate buyers of financial services and products to keep things simple. The book is less of a guide and more of a flip-through style publication, with segments and writing styles similar to that of her blog posts (that I have been a long-time reader of). It is possible to digest it all in one sitting due to simplicity and basic nature of the content. I wasn't blown away by anything in particular throughout, and although there was nothing wrong with the book per se, there wasn't anything that would stretch further than common sense and wholesome, aesthetic living.Alice Waters, the iconic food luminary, presents 200 new recipes that share her passion for the many delicious varieties of vegetables, fruits, and herbs that you can cultivate in your own kitchen garden or find at your local farmers’ market. I’ll give you a peek behind the curtain with my thought processes of saying goodbye to something I built from scratch (though I’ll admittedly be more detailed and frequent about this topic in my newsletter), I’ll write a monthly series of letters to myself ten years ago (which is when this blog really took off), I’ll share a monthly countdown of AoS’ most popular posts of all time (the top three are all over ten years old!), and as always, the regular contributors will continue to share their fantastic essays. Together, we’ll write about places we love, books and podcasts we’re into, and our current thoughts about relationships, work, travel, and community.

Olyan könnyedséget közvetít, ami képes meggyógyítani a lelket (mind)." Like the podcast, I want to end this space well, on my terms, while it’s still a thing I’m proud of — so I’m not making this decision because I no longer think it’s good. In fact, I think last year was one of our best years. Onaantastbare meningen of loepzuivere ideeën bestaan namelijk niet; er zijn altijd meerdere invalshoeken.” A few books, a rotation of contributing writers, a course or two launched, and several iterations of that podcast, and here I am, in 2020, ready to give this beloved space the final bow it deserves.
