Description

To get going, you need to connect the Artist 12 (2nd Gen) to your device of choice – mine being a Windows 10 laptop. Although, presumably, the tablet would work using a USB-C to USB-C cable, this isn’t supplied – I had to make do with the 3-in-1 cable provided. The Artist 12 features 6 handy shortcut keys with a slim touch pad. Each shortcut key can be customized as needed to fit you preferred tool while your touch bar can be programmed to zoom in and out on your canvas, scroll up and down, and more. These customization options allow you to optimize your workflow , to create your ideas faster and more efficiently. The express keys along the side of the Artist 12 tablet are customizable to suit your workflow. You can also have different profiles of keyboard shortcuts for the different apps you work in. So you can have one set assigned for painting in Krita while having another for sculpting in Blender. c. To switch to drawing tablet mode, press the power key and hold for 3 seconds. The indicator light will blink blue and orange. Press the power key again to return to normal mode. The XP-PEN Artist 12 has a vibrant display, capable of reproducing 94% of the Adobe RGB color space. This is equivalent to 90% of NTSC, or 127% of sRGB. For most other screens, this would be overkill. There’s normally not any need for that much vibrancy. But considering that this is an artist display, it makes sense. You want to be able to choose from as many colors as possible, without being limited by your screen.

If multiple monitors are used in duplicate mode, the work area of the device will be mapped to all monitors. When the pen moves in the work area, the cursor on all monitors will move at the same time. As usual, all the main creative software apps will work with this like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator (actually all the Adobe CC apps!), SAI, Corel, GIMP, Krita, Blender 3D, Clip Studio and MediBang etc. Capable of reaching 8192-levels of pressure sensitivity, providing you with precise accuracy to draw and paint naturally with smooth, enhanced, performance. The Artist 12 2nd gen has 8 customizable express keys along one side. Six of them have braille-like bumps on them to give a slight feel at your fingertips for which button is under them. The Artist 10 2nd gen has only 6 express keys, while the Artist 16 has 10 keys. Color temperature: The driver enables five modes, i.e., low blue light, 6500K (default), 7500K, 9300K, and USER. In the USER mode, color temperature can be customized by adjusting the R, G and B values. The stylus is noticeably more sensitive than that of the older Deco Pro we reviewedand much closer to the drawing experience of Wacom’s grip pen.

I didn’t experience any lagging, even when scribbling away quite fast. Drawing ever-so-sloooooooowly did produce a slight ‘wobble’ in straight lines, but to be fair, you’re going to get that on most tablets. The end of the lines also tapered very nicely. Illustrator in a complicated relationship with his sketchbook. Keyboard monkey for DrawYourWeapon. Afflicted with a violent coffee addiction. Known to yawn like a wookiee. The build quality of the display is really good and does feel like a premium device. It isn’t very heavy and can easily be transported around in your bag/case.

Getting started

You wouldn’t want a higher resolution than 1920 x 1080 on a tablet this size, as working in an app like Photoshop would make its many menus and tabs too small to work with – but here, it’s all good. The user interface of the PenTablet application has stepped up it’s fairly straightforward to navigate. It’s divided into three main sections: working area, pen settings, and shortcut keys. Work area You can set a combination of multiple keys such as Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. When you press the combination key, the set shortcut keys will all run once. Photoshop is a great example, because it’s genuinely well-designed software. There are shortcut keys for most functions, the layering interface is straightforward, and there are tons of powerful tools. But when you’re working from scratch, it’s still difficult to draw even basic shapes with precision. You can be using the best design software on the most powerful PC, and it won’t matter. A mouse just wasn’t made to work that way. So instead of blaming your software or your computer, why not take a look at your interface? A well-designed touch display is the best way to create original artwork on your computer. Windows 7 (or later), Mac OS X 10.10 (or later), Chrome OS 88 (or later), Android (USB3.1 DP1.2), Linux
