The biggest challenge for Tanaka was to make Seiko watches, particularly the high-end Grand Seiko and King Seiko brands, stand out on store shelves above their competition. He aspired to both figuratively and literally outshine the Swiss. As Seiko began moving significantly upmarket in recent years, some fans worried the brand was straying from the everyman persona they'd fallen in love with. The recently relaunched Seiko 5 Sport line, however, is a model for Seiko to continue to make excellent, inexpensive automatic watches. It's also an example for how the company can transform popular lines of the past — in this case, the Seiko 5 Sports collection and the classic SKX dive watch — into modern products that better fit the brand's now more polished image. The timepiece is automatic. It comes with the 7S26 movement. We met the mechanism in its brother’s review, but in case you forgot, there are 21 jewels and a 41-hour power reserve. It’s been reported that it can last 43 hours, though. The circles and printed numbers on the dial are reminiscent of pilot watches. This, again, goes very well together with the military style. Seiko 5 SNK805 case The surface is slightly matte, giving it a lovely texture while also reducing glare and reflections, and helping to boost visibility. The finish on the dial compliments the tool-like aspect of the watch while also matching the matte case.

The SNK807 looks identical to its counterpart. The only difference is that it’s a vision in blue. We think the colour makes it more appealing. But it might not be the best for camouflage. The watch also features a red-tipped second hand. The opposing side of this hand has a luminous dot, much like the meatball on an SKX, allowing you to read the seconds in the dark. Just like its brother, there are rings that tell the time. One of them reads the minutes in an hour while the other reads the hours in a day. The watch serves as an ideal everyday timepiece that can be worn with a variety of clothes and on a variety of events. Seiko 5 SNK805 DialThe device isn’t that heavy. It comes with a calendar too. The feature will be useful when on camping trips. There is lume on its display, but you can barely read it underwater as it’s not very pigmented. Movement The face on these watches is actually quite “busy” and might not suit everything. They have crammed in a lot of detail with a larger ring of minutes, followed by a smaller one of hours. Both using Arabic numerals of course. Yes, there is lume on its dial. However, it isn’t that strong. It’s just bright enough to be read when it’s getting dark outside.

Zaratsu polished markings adorn the dial like perfect imaginary buildings rising from a snowy polar field. Our attention may be drawn to the dial surface initially, but after wearing the Seiko Snowflake for a while, our focus shifts to the markers. The case of the Seiko 5 SNK805 has a rugged look thanks to its matte finish. Would the case be polished, it would lose a lot of its tool-like character and appear more like a classy everyday watch. A good choice by Seiko. The sides, on the other hand, are polished, which creates a nice contrast, and gives the watch a greater perception of quality and being well-finished. I have also a SRPE61 with a 4R36 movement, the SNK seems to outlast it. Dunno … if you’re mainly desk working then hand winding may be important, but when I’m doing stuff the SNK lasts longer for me. Perhaps its down to individual patterns. The dial shows a sort of sunburst metallic canary yellow at times, and a more muted, mellow warm yellow at other times.Tanaka contributed to redefine the theory of watch design, partly inspired by the skill of gem cutting. By 1962, he developed a set of guidelines which he dubbed the " Grammar of Design.” The brushing atop these is replicated on the hands, which otherwise mimic those present on the SNZG in size and profile.

The timepiece comes with the 7S26B movement. It has 21 jewels between its gears and a 41-hour power reserve. No, the jewels aren’t real. They’re synthetic. They’re placed between gears to reduce friction. The more present, the more accurate your watch would be. 21 is a standard amount. It’s great looking, durable, robust, and powered by automatic mechanical movement. This means that amongst watch collectors and enthusiasts, it is a watch that is appreciated and respected. It goes to show that price isn’t everything in the watch-collecting hobby. Most of the time, field watchesare quartz. After all, they were created to be read on the field. Automatic watches aren’t as accurate as their quartz counterparts. There are so many parts in them that they’re not as reliable. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands are clearly seen though as is the red-tipped second hand, so it is certainly a very functional and user-friendly watch. Just as it was designed to be. The MovementThe design team at Seiko relied both on using top quality materials as well as thoroughly defining unique shapes and lines to each model. The final Zaratsu polishing treatment guaranteed luxury products that “brilliantly sparkled”. On the dial, the marks have been separated into two rings and printed. The outer ring of the dial indicates minutes, and the inner ring hours – once again reminding us of a pilot's watch. Round cases and rudimentary lugs were paired with dull, conventional dials in most designs. There was no design department within the company until 1956 – prior to that, the only people doing design work at the company were those in charge of the dial's form factor – in other words – engineers. The movement isn’t supposed to be beautiful or highly decorated. It is supposed to be an automatic that does the job and which allows you to appreciate the fine art and technology behind a mechanical movement. Seiko 5 SNK805 strap Are you ready? I can’t hear you! I said, are you ready?!? The temperatures are climbing, doors are opening, and planes are starting to fly. Summer is on the way and there’s nothing better than an inexpensive watch match-up to set the scene! This time, we step away from dive watches and focus on military inspired watches. It’s the Timex MK1 Mechanical versus a longstanding favorite in the Seiko 5 SNK805.
