Remember: Stripping knives should never cut hairs and therefore should be quite dull. If your knife is cutting into the hairs then manually dulling on a rough surface is recommended. If we were to cut hairs (with clippers or scissors) this would likely cause permanent damage to the coat (more on that later). Convinced that the Bichon Frise is a unique breed worthy of study yet? Good. Because we’re about to focus on the individual characteristics of this French breed that will help you to understand why so many people walk around with Maltese-looking dogs that actually have all the positive qualities of that other breed, the Bichon Frise. This dog can be considered a large toy dog and, while it looks similar to the Maltese, does have some distinctions that make it a breed in and of itself. And although the fluffy white coat can intimidate potential dog owners who don’t like the idea of a lot of grooming, the Bichon Frise is surprisingly low-maintenance, meaning that they’re not big shedders and won’t be a hamper on that roommate of yours with dog allergies. Handstripping helps support the healthy growth of hair, but it’s helpful to understand how it helps. To do this let’s first explain the four stages of hair growth in dogs.

I often use an undercoat rake on pet Airedales, Lakelands, and Wire Foxes. Some breeds may not need undercoat removal. But what exactly makes them such popular, well-respected dogs… and does a strong breed always mean that a Labrador Retriever will be the right dog for you? Just when you think you’ve gotten all the dog breeds figured out, you take a look at a dog that looks like a Maltese and find out that it’s not a Maltese at all – it’s actually a Bichon Frise. Fantastic! More time studying dog breeds is clearly called for, which means you get to expand your knowledge of pets just a little more. We dive deeper into the best tools for each breed in our Handstripping Masterclass. Stripping Knives Wiry coat breeds also have different skin to many other breeds, which brings with it a host of separate care considerations, all of which should be taken care of with wiry breed shampoos. There are a range of brands out there, here at The Pet Retreat we use Wildwash Shampoos, all of which are made from natural ingredients. Detangling CombA part of the English Kennel Club since the club was started in 1873, the Yorkshire Terrier came to the U.S. in the 19th century where it has remained a popular breed. The portable pooch was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885, and has become a popular breed in North American thanks to its big personality and luxurious coat. Perpetually popular, these dogs are favourites at pet shops and dogs shows alike. Very long and or matted coats – start with low number of blades and finish with high blade numbers.

As their name suggests, Peekapoo is a mixed breed dog whose parents are a purebred Pekingese and a purebred Toy or Miniature Poodle. Both his mom and dad have a lot of impressive traits, and their offspring will inherit a good portion of them- if not all. Mars Double-Wide Coat King Stripping Comb for Dogs, 12-Blade: Sheepdogs, Newfoundland, Schnauzers, Wirehaired Pointer, Wirehaired Terrier, Dutch Shepherd, and similar coated dog breeds. The average pet will only need stripping every 3 to 6 months, however more frequent grooming will make for a more desirable “show coat”. In the past, working terriers would have their coats naturally pulled by running through brush, hunting, tunneling, or simply by going about their day.

Coat King Stripping/Hair Shedding Combs

Grooming coordinates with this cycle to manually remove dead and loose hairs, while also allowing us to shape the coat to appear more stylish. That’s why we are super excited about a new Roomba-esque robot created by and named Beetl that will roam your yard looking for the dropped deuces and scoop them up for you. Like magic.

Okay, so maybe not everyone likes homework. With that in mind, let’s get it all out of the way and focus on this curious dog known as the Bichon Frise, French for “curly white lap dog.” Hey, the French are nothing if not a little bit literal. I personally have a carpet sample from a hardware store filled with chalk and sand that I will rub my knives on. Others will cut up a cardboard box before using their knives to dull them. Do not ever use a fresh knife on a dog. Stripping Stones A stripping stone, metallic stone, and a pumice stone Developed in the 1950s in the United States, the Peekapoo is one of the oldest designer dog breeds. In fact, these hybrids had their start even before the term designer dogs was coined in the first place- and their long history is just a testament to their many qualities. Bred to be a low-shedding, hypoallergenic companion dog, the Peekapoo gained popularity by the early 1960s and is still a popular breed today. Staging is stripping different sections of the dog at different times so you get a desired result. For example: The longest parts of the coat are pulled first and left for 6-8 weeks, so the dog is in perfect coat for a dog show. Dogs will be pulled baby-skin smooth in those areas.

The range offers a selection of bladed knives for each and every dog breed as well as for use on horses, all breeds of cattle as well as cats. The Coat King range is ideal for use as an aid for hand stripping and especially for the removal of dead undercoat prior to clipping. Even within traditional dog and cat breeds as with any animal hair texture is often heavily influenced by the sire use. Consequently you may get a “standard texture ” where the progeny animal has a “coarse” or “finer” texture than the normal breed standard. (This may be especially relevant in cross breeds.) In general, the Doxiepoo is a well-mannered dog who has no problem being their master’s sole source of affection and attention. However, should your Doxiepoo be introduced to children when their puppies, he will no doubt grow up thinking they are all siblings. They do not easily take to other pets unless they have be socialized at a young age. For this reason, we recommend the Doxiepoo being the only pooch in the house – trust us, they’ll provide enough entertainment for a lifetime of laughs! Carding knives come in many shapes and sizes, and many stripping knives can be used for carding by changing from a pulling to a raking technique.Stripping too short, removing far too much coat, or using the wrong technique or tools are common mistakes. Hypoallergenic – due to the fact that they don’t shed hair, they are a great choice for anyone who is allergic to dogs Mars Double-Wide Coat King Stripping Comb for Dogs, 30-Blade: Newfoundland, Giant Schnauzer, Terriers, Wolfhounds, Collies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Terriers, Basset hounds, Belgian Malinois, Great Pyrenees, Afghans, Boxers, Spaniels (upper body), Saint Bernards, and similar coated dog breeds. As the name implies, hand stripping can be done with just your hands. However, tools will make the job a little easier (especially for newcomers).
