Thankfully, after requesting it for years, they’ve brought out a knurled handle option for their Commercial Pro Series. These are my personal favorite, but they are more expensive and may not be what most want. Easy and comfortable to hold, this pair offers a soft cushioned grip that felt secure in both dry and wet hands during testing. We also appreciate the dumbbell's durability and think that they'll last years in your at-home gym—making them well worth the rather hefty investment. You can adjust each dumbbell from 10 to 50 pounds, in 10-pound increments, which is great if you're only looking to replace five sets of weights. But if you're a beginner who wants to progress at a slower pace, we recommend FitRx's Adjustable Dumbbells that adjust in 2.5-pound increments from 5 to 52.5 pounds. With that being said, we did find this ProForm pair to be super simple to adjust with just the turn of a handle. Another issue for some may be the upfront investment. You will pay more for adjustable dumbbells initially, but after you factor in how much you would spend on the same weights as fixed dumbbells, you may find the cost of the adjustable dumbbells to make more sense. Yes, you could buy a pair at a time and build up, but this would take much longer to do, and you would have all the weights you need by purchasing the adjustable dumbbells upfront. Our Verdict To curate a list of the best adjustable dumbbells, members of the Verywell Fit editorial team tested 30 adjustable dumbbells in The Verywell Testing Labto see how they performed in key areas. We rated each set on a scale of 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (highly recommend) for ease of setup, adjustability, ease of use, grip, durability, storage, and overall value.

We also noticed that, although the adjustable dumbbells are slightly bulkier than regular dumbbells, they still maintain the traditional dumbbell shape (unlike many other adjustable dumbbells). This allows you to perform any traditional strength training exercise without having to alter your form. We love how easy these adjustable dumbbells are to adjust between exercises. We were also able to maintain a good grip on the dumbbells, even with wet hands, thanks to the grippy rubber handles. We loved how grippy the pair was with dry hands, but did notice some slipping when performing exercises with wet hands. When dropped on gym flooring, the dumbbells remained completely intact with no scratches. And dropping them on concrete resulted in only minor scratches with no broken or chipped parts. We think that this pair offers reliable durability, making them well worth the investment. to 4.7 stars: These dumbbells are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them. The 5 to 50-pound weight options make this a great choice for most levels, but advanced weightlifters may want to opt for a heavier set, like NÜOBELL's 80LB Classic Adjustable Dumbbells. And beginners should note that the 5-pound increments offer less accessibility to a lower weight. Verywell Fit writer Lindsey Lanquist has years of experience in the health and fitness space. For this piece, she prioritized adjustable dumbbells that were easy to use and genuinely well-reviewed by those who've tried them. She also made sure to feature adjustable dumbbells in a range of different weights and styles. After all, personal preference can vary a lot—and you deserve an adjustable dumbbell set that meets your precise needs. Some of the weights in one of the dumbells are slightly bowed which makes it hard to pull out sometimes and you have to have a little force pushing them in which has caused unnecessary damage with scraping. One of the insertable 2.5 weight is also flaking whatever coating it has. Since this adjustable dumbbell has a more traditional shape, it can be used in a similar fashion as your basic fixed dumbbell. You can perform the dumbbell pull-overs and overhead extensions as well as other exercises such as the goblet squat because you can hold the inside of the weight securely without compromising your form. The weight increments are also consistent. Each turn adjusts the dumbbell by 5 pounds. The dumbbell provides up to 90 pounds as is.

Since the handle is in the middle of the dumbbell and is surrounded by the pinned weight, it does have a few limitations. For example, you won't be able to do certain exercises such as the dumbbell pull-over for the lats and the double-arm overhead extension for the triceps because you can't hold the weight as you should for those movements. Perfect for intermediate-to-advanced weightlifters, these dumbbells adjust from 15 to 55 pounds in 10-pound increments, making a single dumbbell the equivalent of five sets of weights. This weight range may not be the best for beginners, as starting off with 15-pound weights and progressing the load at a pace of 10 pounds can be difficult for those just starting out. We also consulted with experts for safety cues and buying advice for adjustable dumbbells. The experts we spoke to included: Don’t expect these to feel like traditional fixed dumbbells; their shape is boxy and the handle is caged. We were also impressed that the dumbbells came fully assembled and were super easy to set up. Easier to store than other options on our list, this pair came with its own storage bases. Overall, recommend this set to someone who doesn't require weights below 15 pounds and feels comfortable progressing weights in 10-pound increments. Even though these are my favorite adjustable dumbbells, they aren’t without their flaws. High Weight Bulkiness

Although these dumbbells don't come fully assembled, set up and unboxing is relatively easy (it took us less than nine minutes), and the dumbbells ship with a manual with directions and pictures for a six-step setup. An intermediate or advanced lifter shouldn't have a problem setting these up, but a beginner may require some assistance. and below: We don't recommend dumbbells with this rating; you won't find any on our list. How We Tested the Adjustable Dumbbells One disadvantage of adjustable dumbbells is that the shape of the weight may force you to adjust how you train. The size of the weight or the way it's designed could force you to select another exercise or alter how you perform it. Isabella Broggini is the Commerce Editor for Verywell Fit and a certified personal trainer who has trained clients at Equinox. Isabella strength-trains using dumbbells several times a week. While testing adjustable dumbbells in The Verywell Testing Lab, Isabella focused her attention on the time it took to adjust each dumbbell throughout the workout circuit as well as how long it took her to set up and unbox each dumbbell. She performed side-by-side comparisons of products and collected first-hand data. The Ativafit Adjustable Dumbbell has a small weight range that is good for beginner lifters but comes as a single dumbbell rather than a set. The Yes4All 105-pound Adjustable Dumbbell Weight Set is not easy to adjust since it has 28 different weight plates but if you're looking for heavy dumbbells, these go up to 100 pounds per dumbbell. We love the textured grip on this adjustable dumbbell, which is perfect for weightlifters in need of a particularly anti-slip handle. When performing lifts with wet hands during the wet test, our hands never slipped from the handle, even with a heavier weight.

Again, while the caged handle doesn’t bother me, I recognize that people used to lifting with traditional fixed dumbbells might not like the feeling. It might take some getting used to. But, it’s a small sacrifice to make considering the big value you get from these. A Little NoiseThe BowFlex SelectTech adjustable dumbbell is easier to operate because you adjust a dial to change the weights. The dials can be turned in either direction. You have to make sure the numbers are the same on both ends of the weight before removing it from the stand. The extender options are absolutely worth it for those who lift heavier and need more weight; the non-expandable options are a great value for people who don’t need lots of weight.
