Description

FAA regulations call for drone pilots to keep the aircraft within line of sight, another potential issue with the Avata. I had a spotter at my side for test flights, someone who could keep an eye on the drone and let me know if I needed to make an emergency stop or landing. The Avata also includes an ADS-B AirSense transponder; if you're flying above the treetops, the drone warns you when other aircraft are nearby. For the record, the DJI Motion Controller supports more intuitive and easy-to-use controls for the DJI Avata, supporting one-handed operation and using hand movements to control the drone. Meanwhile, the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 is required for users who want to use M (Manual) Mode for precise, complete and limitless control. Often the size of the sensor is overkill for video capture, and only a small portion of it is used to achieve the maximum 4K resolution. What DJI did with the Avata is use some of that extra additional capture to add a new feature, HorizonSteady.

The firm's engineering teams deserve an incredible amount of credit for making a small, high-speed drone that's very easy to unbox and fly. The Avata hovers in place when your hand is off the throttle, moves through the air effortlessly, and is extremely responsive to controls (enough so that 30mph flights through complex environments are possible). Racing pros can swap to a manual controller for 60mph flight too, though I wasn't brave enough to try this mode—I don't have the skills for flying quadcopters without autopilot assists. The 155° FOV is only available when the aspect ratio is 4:3, and the video recording specification is 2.7K@50/60fps or 1080p@50fps/60fps; the aspect ratio is 16:9, and the video recording specification is 4K@50/60fps, 2.7K@50/60fps, or 1080p@50/60fps. The bundle with the enhanced DJI Goggles 2 is a stellar choice, while the option with the DJI FPV Goggles V2 is a decent middle ground for those on a budget. The sensor here is a significant upgrade over what came before with a 1/1.7in sensor compared to the 1/2.3in on the DJI FPV. The use of inches is somewhat confusing for sensor sizes, but the Avata camera has almost 64% more surface area to capture light, with a 43mm-squared area compared to 28.46mm-squared.

DJI Avata is compatible with DJI Goggles 2, DJI Goggles Integra, DJI FPV Goggles V2, DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, DJI RC Motion 2, and the DJI Motion Controller. There are multiple ways to buy the DJI Avata FPV, though which of these you need depends on if you own the original FPV hardware and what Goggles you'd like to use it with. Data is tested under different standards in an outdoor open environment without interference. Only to serve as a reference for the max one-way communication distance without considering RTH. Please pay attention to the RTH prompts during the actual flight. Max one-way communication distance of DJI Avata in countries/regions of different standards: Similarly, all the modes are a little slower than its predecessor, with 'Normal' mode only offering 8m/s and sport mode 14m/s. And, climbing is capped at just 6m/s irrespective of mode, where the FPV had no limit on climb rate in manual mode and 15m/s in Sport.
