Description

In 1964, John Taylor, an English mathematician, developed a fingering system that allowed an ocarina to play a full chromatic octave using only four holes. [1] This is now known as the English fingering system, and is used extensively for pendant ocarinas. It is also used in several multi-chamber ocarinas, especially in ones that are designed to play more than one note at a time. There is a good chance you can play it using an alto G, as it overlaps both ranges. In other words, you do not use an ocarina in a particular 'key' to play in that key, but rather to gain access to a different range of notes. In addition to providing more range, multichamber transverse ocarinas also have a few other benefits: You may find yourself holding the instrument extremely tightly out of a fear of dropping it, but there's really no need to. Ocarinas are designed to balance between the right thumb and pinky finger when held parallel to the ground.

Being small they can be worn as a pendant. They are great for spontaneous musical performance as you can always have one with you. To be precise, the low C of an alto C ocarina is C5 (in scientific pitch notation), the high C is C6, and its frequency of C6 is double that of C5.A subhole is a small hole which may be covered by sliding a finger forwards, covering two holes at once. They are used to play notes below the tonic. For more, see ' Multichamber ocarinas and their tuning systems' and ' The fingering systems of multichamber ocarinas'.

Some harmony ocarinas utilise a variation of the pendant fingering system arranged linearly for 4 fingers of each hand. With this system each chamber can attain a range of about an octave, at the cost of tuning accuracy. This trend has also lead to some manufacturers selling ocarinas which are inspired by other media franchises with varying, often poor, playability. Because as long as you do not need to play incidentals, you will use the two holes together, closing or opening them at the same time, as if there was only one hole.
