In late November 1120, Henry and his vast entourage arrived in Barfleur, the harbour east of Cherbourg that was the main departure point from Normandy to England at this time; a voyage from Barfleur to Southampton would take ten or 12 hours with a favourable wind. This book was downright horrible, and I mean that in the sense that it was full of horrible, violent, petty, and devastating events, figures, and situations. I literally had to put it down because it was so graphic and unsettling at times. The amount of gouged eyes...*shudders* Life is sweets! Ugaz’s case is all too familiar in Peru, where powerful groups regularly use the courts to silence journalists by fabricating criminal allegations against them.’ In doing so, Spencer’s aim is not to revise traditional understandings of these events but simply to bring them to life for a wide audience. In this, he certainly succeeds. Yet his jaunty narrative raises fundamental questions about the role of popular history. Should this just be a matter of telling tales, as the general public often seems to think? Or should popular historians not also seek to analyse sources and events (as academic historians do)? Put simply, is it enough to focus on what, or should we also be asking how and why? The White Ship by Charles Spencer | Waterstones

Matthew Perry was found UNDERWATER in hot tub by assistant who lifted his head out to try and get him oxygen Richard FitzStephen, the skipper of a splendid vessel, the Blanche-Nef, stepped forward to greet the king. He proudly recalled how his father had served King Henry’s own father, William the Conqueror, as captain of the Mora, the flagship of the Norman invasion fleet in 1066. To have located pieces of a ship that match the construction techniques and scale of the White Ship is incredibly exciting -- and potentially very significant. In this tale, Spencer takes you the reader on a tour of the timeline of events from William the Conqueror leading up to the tragedy at sea, and the repercussions for the English throne beyond this. None of the figures (not even Henry I) or the events discussed in “The White Ship” come ‘alive’ and therefore the straight-forward academia is all that merits “The White Ship”. Occasionally, Spencer debunks some myths by suggesting alternate theories matching puzzle pieces to provide a rounded, macro view of the period adding some strength to “The White Ship”.Resembling a Viking longship, the White Ship was one of the biggest such vessels ever constructed. It was clinker-built, meaning that the oak hull planks overlapped each other, and propelled by 50 oarsmen. By autumn 1120, Henry had finally put these problems to rest – or so it seemed. He had decisively defeated Louis at Brémule in the summer of 1119. And he accompanied this with a series of deft diplomatic initiatives. That same summer, Henry wed his son (and designated heir) William Ætheling to the daughter of Count Fulk, bringing Anjou into alliance. The following June, the young prince did homage to Louis for Normandy on Henry’s behalf, a symbolic act of peacemaking that served to smooth ruffled feathers at the French court.
