I didn’t hit any shots with the 5-wood on the Flightscope, but it’s worth noting that I am really pleased they have included a fairway and that is a 5-wood, not a 3-wood. The extra loft and slightly shorter shaft make it that much more usable for beginners as a 3-wood is often just too difficult to hit. Overall, this set is hard to fault for what it does, which is allow golfers to get out onto the course and experience this great game. At this price tag you're never going to get the perfect set of clubs but we were seriously impressed with what has to be one of the best golf club sets you can buy. Something else that works well with these irons is how well you can make a combo set with them with Takomo’s 301 CB iron. Not everyone wants to look down at a blade 4 and 5-iron, so having the added help and forgiveness from the CB is a brilliant option.

This isn’t something I often think is a good thing but for beginners who probably arent very consistent, high launch and high spin means the ball is going to stay in the air for longer which will increase their enjoyment when playing. I very much enjoyed the flat trajectory the FX fairway wood produced; at my ball speed, it’s no issue, but other golfers may need to loft up to the 18-degree head to get optimal launch conditions. Golf manufacturers assemble their golf clubs to an average size and flex but that does not mean that you fit that mould. MacGregor have done a brilliant job putting together the perfect set of clubs for a player just starting their golfing journey. The driver is set at 10.5 degrees, with the fairway wood at 15. As it is a set designed for beginners, perhaps Wilson could have added a few more degrees as it can be quite difficult for the less skilled player to get the ball in the air. I then moved onto hitting the 5 hybrid. This is 24 degrees and has a graphite shaft. Again the distance is perfectly gapped from the 6 iron, and it launched really high and carried a really impressive distance, probably around the distance I’d expect from a ‘premium’ brands hybrid.

Considering the low price, both sets pleasantly surprised us in terms of performance. The CG3000 set has a 13 degree driver, which sends the ball high and is a perfect amount of loft for a beginner that tends to swing the club slower. The 460cc driver is set to 13 degrees of loft. The perimeter weighting of the club effectively broadens the sweet spot. Offset is a higher handicapper's friend though so golfers will enjoy how user-friendly these clubs are. Despite the average feel, performance was fine with the fairway and hybrid. The fairway wood comes in at 18 degrees of loft (so essentially a five wood), whilst the hybrid at 24 degrees converts to around a 4 iron. Couple this with a 6-SW iron set and the gaps are just about right for a 10-club set, with beginners and higher handicappers having plenty of clubs at their disposal to hit for a wide range of yardages.

We did feel that the upper end of the bag lets the set down slightly though. The woods and the driver feel a bit more unforgiving and whippier (in the shaft) than the irons. The set comes with all the right clubs, with a couple of customisable options that allow a beginner to get started on the right foot. It's a similar story with the 10-club set of the MacGregor CG3000, as the driver, irons and putter are a particular stand out. Again, the fairway woods and hybrid perform well, but don't feel overly fast, and we would customise the putter if we had the choice by adding one of the best putter grips to enhance the comfort and control.
