It doesn't seem fair to match the new Tamron against Canon's latest L-glass, so we'll match it against this perennial favorite. This is a lens where Canon got it right - it meets and exceeds the sharpness performance of the Tamron, shows less CA, and less corner shading as well. Distortion is a bit more noticeable on the Canon; both lenses feature USM style focusing and image stabilization.

While this new lens is designed for digital SLR cameras, it can be used with both full-frame sensor and AF 35mm cameras with a zoom range of 70-300mm; or with APS-C sensor cameras where the angle of view will change the zoom range equal to 109-465mm *4. Again image quality is similar, good out to the corners of the APS-C frame and chromatic aberration is not visible. I have had quite some lenses. With my canon 550d and 5d mark III i had the 50mm prime, the 70-300 IS, the 70-300 IS L, the 70-200 4.0 L and the 70-200 2.8 II (twice). Now i switched to Nikon and i have the 35mm prime and the 18-105 kit lens. Much more problematic is the inconsistent focus accuracy I'm experiencing from the Tamron 70-300 VC. A Sunsniper Pro Strap so that I can wear the D7000/Tamron at my side while hiking or shooting at outdoor festivals.

The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens focuses internally and has FTM - manual focus is always available and the focus ring does not turn during autofocus.

Tamron's feature-rich new 70-300mm telephoto lens aims to go top of the class

An Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) *1 lens made from high-grade materials delivers best in class resolution. Tamron’s own Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) *2 and Vibration Compensation (VC) make the lens fast, quiet and easy to use. Both lenses show similar levels of vignetting wide open. I'd estimate the Tamron vignetting at about 1 stop of underexposure in the corers, wide open on a full frame sensor, across the whole zoom range. There's not a huge difference between these images, especially in the center of the frame. The Tamron shows slightly less chromatic aberration and slightly better sharpness in the corner though. It's interesting that both seem to show the same type of CA (green/magenta).

Image stabilization is always difficult to test in any quantitative fashion. To look at these two lenses I tried several techniques but basically it boils down to taking lots and lots of shots at various shutter speeds with each lens and then looking at all the images and coming up with some sort of statistical assessment of sharpness.

March 9, 2010, Saitama, Japan– President and CEO Morio Ono of optical equipment manufacturer Tamron Co., Ltd., announced another advance in their pursuit of high resolution images in the telephoto lens category with the development of a 70-300mm F/4-5.6 telephoto zoom lens featuring image stabilization––VC (Vibration Compensation) and an ultrasonic auto-focus drive –– USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive). The SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) high-resolution DSLR telephoto zoom lens has been produced for the Nikon mount, with the development of compatible mounts for Canon and Sony to follow *3. One of Nikon's better lenses, the Nikon offers superior sharpness, but poorer CA performance, when compared to the Tamron. We haven't had an opportunity yet to test this lens on a full-frame body. Otherwise, both lenses feature USM style focusing and image stabilization. Overall: I really do love this lens, for the price it is almost unbeatable. The build is very good, no problems with that. It is solid and feels good in the hands, the zoom is a bit stiff and there is no focus limiter, but these are minor points. The focusing system is good, and does a good job speed wise. And the image quality is truly great until 200mm and a little stopped down, only degrading in the 300mm range to an ok level. In the end I can only end this review with high praise, and highly recommend it for anyone that wants to get a lens in this range, but doesn’t want to pay more for the main brands. I give this lens a solid 4/5 considering price point and performance, it is just as good as the main brands for half the price. Auto-focus has many benefits but sometimes the photographer needs the control of manual focus. Full time manual offers just that: the crossover from auto-focus to manual focus by simply adjusting the focus ring, allowing the photographer to make adjustments on the fly. This feature helps the lens produce impressive results even in telephoto situations where the depth of field is narrow.

This combination of best in class image resolution, Ultrasonic Silent Drive and Vibration Compensation is a new achievement of Tamron technology, culminating in the production of a premium 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens. The Tamron VC seems to make the image "jump" more than the Canon IS when stabilization starts up and is sometimes seems to "jerk" the image during use more than the Canon system, but it seems just as effective once in operation. Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied, is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator. I had to spend a more-than-usual amount of time focus testing this lens - just to confirm what I was seeing.
