When she is offered an opportunity to marry a man of status and wealth, for her family, she accepts. It felt incredibly long, in terms of details, details, details- that didn’t necessarily further the story. I liked that Afi found her voice to stand up to the negative pressures from family, uncle and controlling in-laws (very common to South Asian society too). She pursues formal study to elevate her seamstress skills to become a fashion designer, mingling with the rich and powerful – networks and conveniences she obtains through her all handsome, powerful, rich husband’s family. it soon becomes apparent to Afi that Eli‘s family has ulterior motive‘s and that this marriage is meant to throw a wrench in Eli‘s current relationship.

She has won numerous awards for her scholarship and has held several fellowships, including the Oxford-Princeton Global Leaders Fellowship. Set in Ghana, this book is kind of a subtle take-down of patriarchal values through the medium of a domestic drama. This book does a great job of sinking you deep into the oppressive notions of womanhood and “wifeliness” that are placed upon Afi from the onset of her marriage. Afi was such an interesting character to spend time with, mostly because I found her pure heart and stalwart sense of self to be such a refreshing perspectivee in a female protagonist.

Afi Tekple is a seamstress whose family arranges for her to marry Elikem Ganyo, a rich international businessman who has properties all over Ghana. Themes like deception, ambition, love, and values drench the pages with conflict that evolves into an emotional rollercoaster. I just I suppose didn’t get the direction of the book and don’t really understand what it wanted to accomplish. Usually can't stand other women being blamed for men not having their shit together, so first trigger. A beautiful flat, a car and driver parked in front of the building; you even said he’s promised you a boutique in the new mall.

The idea was not at all unrealistic to me as I’ve seen similar things play out in real life although not quite with people as cosmopolitanly urbane but I’m not disputing the plausibility. but this does not deter Afi she has come to the big city to realize her dream of becoming a fashion designer and is willing to take advantage of her current situation. Her book, Global Norms and Local Action: The Campaigns to End Violence Against Women in Africa, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020.

At a time when adventure is scarce, Medie gives you a lot to look forward to, think about and be grateful for. I liked that Medie wrote about her insecurities around other people who seemed to have accomplished a lot. This title is an easy, enjoyable and nontraumatic read that I highly recommend to those who appreciate the work(s) of Abi Dare, Yaa Gyasi, Akwaeke Emezi and others.

The women in this book are all different, they have all adapted to a society where even the most privileged of them is subject to the whims of a son or husband or boyfriend. It should be a perfect life, yet she’s not happy because there is a rival for her husband’s affections. This is something I've seen in Nigerian soap-type genre fiction, so maybe that's the style; certainly it was extremely engaging and kept my attention. In His Only Wife, we meet men who are defending their societal right to live with more than one wife and women who are feeding to the men’s power by teaching their daughters to play by the rules no one is still allowed to question. I was sceptical about this book, especially since it doesn't follow the genre I usually enjoy; yet, I have to admit I was very pleasantly surprised!
