Scurvy is a disease resulting from a deficiency of vitamin C. Without this vitamin, collagen made by the body is too unstable to perform its function and several other enzymes in the body do not operate correctly. [12] Scurvy is characterized by spots on and bleeding under the skin, spongy gums, 'corkscrew' hair growth, and poor wound healing. The skin lesions are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized. In advanced scurvy there are open, suppurating wounds, loss of teeth, bone abnormalities and, eventually, death. [31] Patients in the NaAscorbate group received 30 g of NaAscorbate Solution (30 g in 100 ml, Biological Therapies, Melbourne, Australia) diluted in 150 ml 5% glucose solution over 1 h followed by a further 30 g diluted with 150 ml 5% glucose over 5 h (60 g over 6 h in total). Patients in the control group received a fluid volume-matched 5% glucose solution (vehicle), administered over 1 h followed by 250 ml 5% glucose over 5 h.
