The City That Never Sleeps - Teeming with life, the Big Apple is more alive than ever before in the Spider-Man series. Also, as a Wii exclusive, there are 6 alternate costumes ( Spider-Carnage for the black suit, and Spider-Armor, Ben Reilly, Spider-Man 2099, Cosmic Spider-Man, and Iron Spider for the red suit). The gameplay of Web of Shadows is, in many respects, reminiscent of older games in the franchise, though many of the elements are much, much different, and this is mostly for the better.

Players can alternate between Spider-Man's two costumes at any time during gameplay, with the game providing several scenarios in which one suit is more useful than the other. Thanks to the symbiote suit potentially influencing his actions, however, Spidey will be put into the position of having to make several different choices across the course of his campaign, all of which will ultimately influence the fate of New York, and while Spidey himself might not be willing to make the difficult choices, his symbiote will often have no such qualms. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows gives you an unprecedented level of gameplay choice, including for the first time, control over the game's direction and outcome. The voice acting in this game is rather terrible however, and there are a few parts of the story that don't totally add up, but overall, I think the story of the game is great. D. plans to weaponize the symbiotes and that he is in league with Spencer Smythe, who aims to control the symbiotes. He also explains that Spider-Man's previous encounters with the symbiote gives him more control over it, though he warns him that the symbiote can still influence his behavior. This is further reinforced when Luke Cage shows up and Spider-Man advises him he was checking on “a friend” in the hospital; fine, this is before New Avengers.

Nothing here wasn’t possible on the last generation of consoles and after playing other open worlds the city of New York seems bland in comparison. The visuals aren’t perfect, mind you; the more generic citizens and enemies tend to be, well, generic, and later in the game, when the city is full of hostile symbiotes, the game tends to slow down on occasion as the screen fills with foes, but these are occasional problems that don’t ruin the experience significantly. The graphics of this game are decent, but don't quite reach what I've come to expect from a home console like the Xbox 360. From the game's direction to Spider-Man's destiny, Spider-Man™: Web of Shadows puts control in the gamer's hands. The traditional 2-D overhead view has been removed, replaced by a new 3D map with an "X", "Y" and "Z" axis which shows the player's position in three-dimensional space (north and south, as well as vertical position). It's a lot of fun web swinging through New York by actually making the throwing motion with the Wii remote, but the sideways swipe for Web-Strike is clunky.

Four days prior, Spider-Man has an encounter with Venom ( Keith Szarabajka), during which part of the latter's symbiote attaches itself to Spider-Man, recreating his black suit. The various other characters, both allies and enemies alike, are also well rendered and animated, leaving most boss battles looking fluid and fantastic, and regular battles fast-paced and brutal.
