Description

It was crafted to pay homage to the Prohibition and represent the rich flavor and vintage barrel strength. During prohibition, the Old Forester distillery was allowed to stay open and make medicinal whiskey. During this time they barreled at 100 proof making the end result, post-angel’s share, around 115 proof. This is their homage to the whiskey they made during prohibition. Old Forester’s 86 Proof is a very straightforward whisky. The mash bill is mid-range rye with 18 percent next to 72 percent corn and a final ten percent malted barley (the same bill for all their bourbon). The juice is aged in a fairly heavily charred oak barrel for an undisclosed amount of time (the youngest barrel is likely older than four years). The whisky is then blended and proofed down to a very manageable 86 proof. Every year, Old Forester releases their most anticipated whisky, Birthday Bourbon. This year’s release was a 12-year-old blend created from 119 barrels of the good stuff.

Old Forester 1920 and 1910 is the brand’s way to offer consumers the taste of their way through their history. For the re-evaluation, I shared the juice neat from Glencairn glasses with my daughter and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer Hannah. While the two share an almost similar production process, they have big differences in the aging process because 1910 Old Fine Whisky undergoes second barreling. Out of all of the polarizing whiskey that has rolled out of Old Forester in the last 5+ years, there seems to be little fanfare over Statesman. Whenever a product has a movie tie-in, it’s probably a safe bet that the product is going to be subpar. Bottled at 95 proof and wearing no age statement, the only thing that Statesman seems to have going for it is that the bottle’s label is unique among the whiskey row series, which all have a somewhat bland white paper label. In fact, I do not believe that Statesman is a part of the Whiskey Row series, but it may as well be because of when it was released and the general shape of the bottle looks the same.By far the best of the 3 Old Foresters I had, the 57.5% you really do not notice it, of course, 2-3 drops are pretty good to discover more, but quite so drinkable! This new release from Old Forester is their signature rye in a single barrel format. It’s bottled without any filtration or cutting with water. Knob Creek Single Barrel is in blue, and Old Forester 1920 is in orange. The center of the circle indicates none of a trait. Further out the line indicates a stronger presence of that trait. Bottled at 43% alcohol by volume, with an 86 U.S. proof, The Old Forester has an average alcohol content for the bourbon market. Worth noting, the former Old Forester Signature has a 100 proof for 50% abv, while the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, released first in 2002, has a 95 U.S. proof (for 47.5% abv). The Old Forester Statesman, which has been released as a marketing event along the film Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is also bottled at 95 proof. You can also find a wink to the 1920 -1933 period with the 1920 Prohibition Style Old Forester bourbon, bottled at 115 proof. Where is The Old Forester bourbon made? If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. This line of bourbon is a stone-cold classic. Their 100-proof expression is made in the same way as their 86 proof. The key difference is after these barrels are blended, they’re barely touched with water, keeping the proof very hearty. Carbon copy of the aroma with a slight addition of some grainy/farmy notes peeking through towards the end.The Old Forester 1920 and 1910 used a similar mash bill ratio: 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. If you are a fan of sweeter and lighter bourbons, go with Old Forester 1910 but if you want a solid dram and more classic bourbon taste, go with Old Forester 1920. This is a perfectly suitable entry-point whisky. It’s great for mixing but needs a fair bit of ice to work as a sipper. And that’s why we’re starting this ranking with it. Old Forestes knows this is a mixing bourbon, so let’s treat it like that. 13. Old Forester Rye Whisky Brown-Forman Interestingly, descendants of George Garvin Brown hold more than 70% of the company’s voting shares, so it is fair to say that bourbon has remained a family affair. Perhaps, that would explain why the Brown-Forman Corporation is one of the largest US-owned companies in the business of wines and spirits.

Old Forester 1920 Review [In Depth] - The Whiskey Shelf

When I had lunch with Old Forester (and Woodford Reserve) Master Distiller Chris Morris, I commended him on the success of the Whiskey Row series, and of this 1920 expression in particular. Whenever I conduct an online poll about the best value for money among accessible bourbons, 1920 inevitably receives multiple nominations from respondents. Knob Creek is a dark and dense whiskey, full of brown sugar, nuts, spices, dried dark fruits such as cherries and dates, cocoa, and wood that coat my mouth in oils and tannins. It’s an interesting bourbon that feels mature and complex. Finish: Tart apple, long smoky finish, toasted marshmallow, chocolate, and satisfying heat Old Forester 1910 Old Fine WhiskyNose: Top notes of orange blossom and cedar. Soon develops the classic rye bread warmth and a lingering waft of buttered pancakes.

The Whiskey Wash, while appreciative of this, keeps full independent editorial control over this article. While they have their fair share of similarities on mash bills, ownership, and distillery, the two bourbons are more different than similar, especially on their tasting notes.
