Imogen, Obviously is going about to find out the answer to that, even if it leads to a lot of hard questions and harder answers. What are some of your other favorite queer stories that you’d recommend for listeners who loved Imogen, Obviously ? i wanna pretend that imogen is in a completely safe space, where she’s accepted, valued, and not questioned.

Aria and Derek were best friends until a few years ago, and Aria has never quite known the reason for their rift. She's supposedly one of Imogens closest friends, yet Imogen talks shit about her every time she isn't around. When she starts developing romantic feelings for one of Lili’s friends, her anxiety spirals into a belief that her newfound attraction could be considered queer appropriation, or an attempt to fit in and seem cool. imgoen and edith's sister bond was so heartwarming, the scene where they were talking about imogen leaving for college really tugged at my heartstrings.Becky just pours her heart out, lets us feel her struggles, and gives her middle finger to all those people who bullied her and still bully her.

Unless they’re actively making out, you need floating heart emojis and a movie score to interpret it. In this intimately realized novel by Albertalli ( Here’s to Us), “token straight, world’s best ally” Imogen Scott, a high school senior, contends with growing feelings for a girl. I've never read any of Becky Albertalli's other books, but the cover of this one is so cute and the concept seems so fun and then.Though other times, she says it’s adorable, and that I’m an innocent bean with Mommy’s- first-day-at-PFLAG energy. Imogen longs to be part of the queer community, and while I’m sure there is some 100% straight and cis person this applies to in the world, it’s such a relatable queer experience. I also loved the way that Imogen was struggling with the fact that one of her closest friends growing up was now off to college with new friends, new inside jokes, and a new life. it has its cute moments, for sure, but those moments are unfortunately overshadowed by the sheer inconsistency of it all.

So when Nora, a girl she apparently fell in love with during the missing time, shows up, Stevie has no recollection of her or their time together plotting to escape their conservative town. I feel a lot of big Ways about Imogen, Obviously, and it's abundantly clear that Becky Albertalli feels strongly, passionately, about this story. And when it seems like her longtime crush is also applying to her dream school, she begins to imagine a whole new world of possibilities. She even has two queer best friends: Gretchen, a fellow high school senior, who helps keep Imogen’s biases in check, and Lili—newly out and thriving with a cool squad of queer college friends. She treats everyone fairly, gives them the benefit of the doubt, even if I, personally, would very much rather hurt them exactly where they’d feel it, perhaps with the skillet the world’s largest pancake was made on (iykyk). But unlike someone in this book, I'm not going to pretend that my queer opinion is the final word on this book and can definitely acknowledge a lot of reasons that other people would enjoy it. last but not least, let it be known that I am saying all of this as a queer person myself, and had I been a character in this book then surely me writing this review would have been seen as even more "proof" of my queerness.

even though it was 400+ pages i couldn't put it down, and flew through the whole thing in a couple of hours today! For the people who are put into boxes and who someday take a step, a lunge, a sprint outside of that box. I praised Going Bicoastal for having a character who is already openly out of the closet and proudly bisexual at the start of that book, but I think there's still definitely merit too books where the main character is discovering their sexuality. It’s hard to know precisely how it will land with listeners, but maybe it can be a reminder that there’s no single queer experience. I was in my mid-twenties when I even started questioning, and I resent the idea that it was somehow my responsibility to know these things about myself when I didn't even have the language to describe myself, as if others have any claim on our identities.i think the awakening itself and imogen coming to terms with sexuality goes hang in hand with the romance itself. Two girls will hug each other right in front of you, and you’ll have no idea if they’re girlfriends or besties or what. Sexuality discovery stories will always hold a special place in my heart, and I adored that part of the story. imogen is a shy, anxious people pleaser, and i wish i could just wrap her up in a warm blanket and reassure her that no matter how she feels, her experiences and feelings are all valid.
