Further info on the types of headunits, and what ive based my research on can be found at the following links: For all-round use including outdoor interviews, indoor voiceovers, field recording, foley, etc., on a tight budget but with a view to long-term ownership.

The company say that the arrays of round ports are of a "revolutionary design" which "improves the acoustic transparency and results in a more natural uncoloured sound". It's a bold claim to which I'll return later, but there is a distinct similarity between the round ports used here, and those employed in Rode's excellent high-end TF5 small-diaphragm capacitor mics. I'd be very happy to use the NTG5. It really is an extremely good-sounding, highly effective, reliable and cost-effective location recording mic... The NTG5’s highly directional supercardioid polar pattern and smooth off-axis response deliver superb audio whether used on a boom pole, pistol grip, or on-camera. It is ideal for capturing dialogue and other detailed sound sources in any environment and will out-perform high-end shotgun microphones that cost several times more. The perfect location recording mic. The NTG5 features a short, super lightweight aluminium body (just 76g!), making it one of the most compact professional shotgun mics on the market. Final Thoughts

V1.6- Note that there are some head-unit photos missing, I will add as I get hold of the various units. Carry SCN Programming to enable CarPlay / Android Auto (it may happen automatically as part of firmware / software programming). Option 3, Partial Dealer Co-operation NTG5.5 was then introduced for the W213/W238 E Class and the CLS adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Support. At launch only COMAND was NTG5.5 and Audio-20 was NTG5*2, Audio-20 was updated to NTG5.5 around the Model Year 2018 release - The NTG5.5 Audio-20 supports both the standard Audio-20 LCD and the larger LCD previously used for COMAND, and of course Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Note that NTG5.5 does not have an inbuilt CD/DVD player but there is an optional external CD/DVD that is in the main glovebox and can be retrofitted. NTG5.5 seems to be made only by Mitsubishi Electric(Melco). NTG5.5 systems have the DAB tuner built in and use the FM/AM antenna connection for DAB aswell. Ifyou want to use a 3.5mm shotgun micwith a computer, you will need an audio interface. We recommendthe AI-Micro, which features dual 3.5mm inputs and a headphone output for audio monitoring. If you want to use an audio interface with an XLR input, you will need a3.5mm to XLR adaptor, such as the VXLR (note: if your microphone needs plug-in power to operate, use an adaptor that convertsphantom power to plug-in power like the VXLR+or VXLR Pro).

RF-bias technology and conformal coating ensure superior performance in adverse weather conditions. A great way to leverage a shotgun mic's high directionalityis to attach it to a boompole or stand that is positionedoutside of the camera shot. The mic should be positioned outside of the frame, a few feet above and pointed directly at the intended sound source (i.e.who is talking)for the best results. There areseveral great options in the RØDE range, such as the Boompole Pro or the Mini Boompole if you’re after a more compact and lightweight option. One of the latest additions to this section of Rode's microphone offerings is the NTG5, a short-shotgun or 'line and gradient' mic billed as the new flagship model and derived directly from the slightly larger (and more expensive) NTG3. In comparison, though, the new mic is about 20-percent less expensive, 50mm shorter, and almost half the weight! And that price reduction is even more impressive given the included complete — and pleasingly high-quality — accessory kit, which allows the mic to be used on the road, straight out of the box. Now that's a very refreshing and enlightened approach that genuinely enhances the product's value for money and practicality, and especially as it's not at the expense of technical excellence. The NTG5 boasts some impressive technical specifications and technological innovation too. Grab Yer 'Cote But its a bit more complicated than that. If you have a Command online NTG5.1 head unit (*see next paragraph), its most likely a case of software updates and coding.

NTG3.5

Comes in a complete location recording kit with WS10 windshield, PG2-R pistol grip and other accessories Sound is a very subjective judgment, and everyone has their definition of “natural-sounding” or “warm sounding” microphone. But there’s also a kind of “industry standard” for sound, which is what you hear every day from TV and in the cinema. Therefore, you will mostly see Sennheiser, Schoeps, DPA or RØDE microphones chosen by audio professionals and filmmakers, for two reasons: first, people in audio postproduction are much more familiar with the sound of these microphones and know much better how to deal with them. Second, the ear of the audience is much more trained for the sound from these microphones. One of the big selling features of the Rode NTG5 is its ultra-low weight. At only 76g, it’s ideal for boom operators to use on location all day long. The Rode Boompole I use is 3 metres long (about 10ft), and in the video, I had it on a stand, but I did handhold for a little while at full extension just to see how it felt. Holding it was a breeze compared to my other shotgun microphones. I felt very little strain on my arms, and I wouldn’t think twice about using this handheld over the talent on a real shoot.
