Description

Fat separators are designed to do the hard work for you, but it's essential to choose a fat separator made from quality material that is easy to use and clean. Most fat separators are made of plastic, but some are made of glass or stainless steel, which some cooks may prefer for their durability and high heat tolerance. We considered fat separators that feature a pour spout and stopper that keeps the fat from traveling upward as well as those that offer a bottom-release feature that drains your liquid at the push of a button. We found the OXO Good Grips 4-Cup Fat Separator to be the best overall. This easy-to-use bottom-draining fat separator has a convenient pour spout and is dishwasher-safe. Once you’ve filled your jug you need to wait a little while for the fat and juices to separate. As we mentioned earlier, the fat is lighter than the juices so it rises to the top. Pour your hot roasting pan juices into the jug and the strainer shield lid will catch any bits of food; as you wait, the fat will separate and rise to the top then – and here’s the clever part – a squeeze of the trigger handle will dispense all the good stuff from the bottom of the jug into a pan below, leaving any fat behind. So you get to make yummy gravy with far less fat, fewer calories and all of the flavour. Winner winner, roast dinner! The basic premise of these separators is the same as spouted separators. You pour the drippings, wait for the fat to rise, and pour from the bottom section of the jug. However, separators with bottom openingsare not poured.

You only need to wait for a minute or two. You’ll know when the jug is ready to use because you’ll have a layer of fat that usually looks more transparent than the juices. Once you’ve poured your drippings in, you again need to wait a minute or two for the fat to separate from the juices. There are a few different styles of fat separators. A classic version is a simple skimming spoon that collects fat as you run it over the top of the gravy. Modern models have a few different styles as well. The bottom-spout or pitcher fat separator looks a bit like a teapot and pours like one too, though the spout is attached lower to the container. There are also bottom-drain fat separators, which use a button to lift a plug at the bottom of the container to serve the gravy, sauce, or juices inside. The bottom-feed separators tend to be better because they reduce the risk of fat mixing with the juices. We do not currently deliver to off-shore islands however in certain circumstances we can provide a delivery quote. Zone CWhen you’ve got those two distinct layers, you place the separator over the bowl or pan you want the juice to end up in. Succulent meat, crispy yet fluffy roasties, yummy veggies and, most importantly, sumptuous gravy… nothing is more mouth-watering than a great roast dinner, so make sure your gravy doesn’t let you down with the fantastic OXO Good Grips Fat Separator Cup. A strainer is built in the lid to catch solid bits of food and the cup has easy-to-read measurement markings. This separator is dishwasher-safe for convenient cleaning.

Cooking is as much an art as it is science. Fat doesn’t mix well with oils and juices. Over time, fat will naturally rise to the top of your gravy, leaving the tasty juices at the bottom. While you can certainly skim the fat off the top, it’s a tedious method. Fat separators do all the hard work for you. Once the two have separated, simply pour from the bottom spout (or release the bottom plug) and you’ll serve delicious gravy while the fat stays at the top. Potters Cookshop is not liable for lost, damaged or stolen parcels if a 'safe space' is specified without a signature being obtained. By stating a safe place customers are therefore taking responsibility prior to receipt. You’ll also want to make sure that the handle is strong and comfortable. Look for a separator that has a rubberized handle for ultimate grip and comfort. As with a spouted separator, you need to make sure that the strainer lid is in place before you pour any drippings into the jug. You also need to make sure that the plug in the bottom of the jug is firmly in place. Just pour hot pan gravy into the jug – the strainer lid removes any lumps – wait a few seconds for the fat to rise to the top, then pour the gravy juices from underneath. The entrance to the spout is set really low down on the jug, so even if you’ve not made much gravy it’s easy to keep the fat from being poured out.

Mixing can sometimes happen with spout separators because tilting the jug can agitate the juices and fats and recombine them. Available in 2- and 4-cup sizes, this spouted, bottom-draining fat separator makes it easy and convenient to separate the liquid you'd like to keep from the fat. Simply place the strainer on top of the cup, put the silicone stopper in the spout, pour the liquid you'd like to separate into the strainer and wait for the fat to rise to the top. A raised shield on the the strainer eliminates splashes to minimize cleanup. The plastic measuring cup style fat separator includes measurement markings in ounces and milliliters so you can see how much liquid you have remaining after the fat is removed. The OXO Good Grips Fat Separator is easy to clean, and all parts are dishwasher safe. A silicone plug keeps the drain sealed and leak-free. Owners of this model praise it for being comfortable and easy to use: simply wait for the fat to separate and then squeeze the trigger built into the handle of the cup to drain your cooking liquid away from the fat. The handle has a soft, non-slip coating to help you grip and prevent dropping if your hands happen to be a little greasy from carving a turkey or roast.

Ask yourself what you’re going to be using your fat separator for. If you’re cooking for just a few people, you can get by with a smaller fat separator–one that maybe holds two cups. For large gatherings, however, you may require a bigger container. Four cups is a popular size, though fat separators can go upwards of eight cups. You can now pour the lean juices into your bowl or pan ready for use! Be aware that some fat may begin to make its way up the spout towards the end of the pour. When this happens, stop pouring. Using a Bottom Opening SeparatorThe OXO Good Grips Good Gravy 4-Cup Fat Separator is, by far, our favorite fat separator on this list. By design, bottom-draining separators make it almost impossible to pass a lot of fatty-liquid through their valves because the fat floats on the top. Some of them have temperamental levers, but the trigger on this model is super easy to control. As you depress the trigger on the comfortable handle, it opens the silicone-lined hole in the bottom, allowing as much or as little liquid to pass as you'd like. That helps significantly in minimizing splashing, creating less mess than other models.

You need to keep a careful eye on how low the fat level is getting. It is liable to fall out of the hole if you’re not watching it. What to Look for in a Fat SeparatorWhilst we make every effort to ensure our items are competitively priced there may be occasions where a competitor might be cheaper and we as a small family business want to make every effort to provide you with a positive shopping experience which is why if we can we will try our best to match their price.
